About the Couple
Bride: Liliya Kozachenko
Groom: Roman Sivers
How they met: “Our parents introduced us during a reunion at the Ukrainian Diaspora in Toronto, where Roman’s mother told a few true stories about him. Given those stories and the fact that Roman’s brother is 6’2", I imagined Roman to be a very tall, strong and handsome man. You cannot imagine my disappointment when I first saw him,” Liliya laughs. “Roman was only 5’7" and was nothing like I imagined—except he was handsome and his smile shattered my initial disappointment to pieces.”
Engagement story: There is significance to Roman’s proposal on November 7th Liliya explains. “We are the same age and our birthdays are two weeks apart. Roman wanted to be older than me when he proposed so he waited until his birthday passed so that he was officially one year older than I was.” Liliya continues, “Roman always employs a shock and awe strategy, so on a cold rainy day on November 7th he invited me to go with him to a lecture on forensic pathology. At this point you are wondering what was he doing on this lecture and why in my right mind did I ever agree? Roman studied criminology in university and I agreed to go with him because when you are with Roman you do crazy things,” Liliya smiles. On the couple’s way home Roman suggested taking Liliya for a drink and this was exactly what she needed after a two-hour lecture. “On our way home after a couple drinks we stopped by Roy Thompson Hall and Roman went on his knee and proposed to me under the pouring the rain. Who can say no to a soaked man?”
