Looking for a slick city honeymoon? Jet to Chicago for an unforgettable urban adventure. By Stephanie Gray
If you’re thinking that hitting the beach just isn’t for you and your new mister post-nuptials, then we urge you to consider a jaunt to the Windy City. Fantastic shopping, upscale dining, a lively arts scene and impressive architecture are all on the menu in Chicago, a city famous for it’s deep-dish pizzas and former resident, Mr. Cool himself: President Barack Obama.
1. SHOP
There's one street to get all your retail fixes: the Magnificent Mile. Aside from department stores like Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus, there are retail staples like Banana Republic and H&M, as well as luxury shopping at Burberry and Louis Vuitton. For a hipper scene, hop over to Wicker Park. There you'll find vintage shops and independent boutiques, like Veruca Salt Fancy (1921 N Damen Ave.) and Akira (1837 W North Ave.). Make sure your man checks out Him (1653 N Damen Ave.), stocked with designer jeans and tees, plus a foosball table and a mini-fridge full of beer. Don't say we didn't warn you!
2. SLEEP
If you're searching for a beautiful boutique hotel, look no further than the Dana Hotel and Spa (danahotelandspa.com). Located downtown, north of the Chicago River (appropriately called River North), this property is just steps away from shopping and dining galore. Get back in the zone with a rejuvenating couple's massage in the spa or book dinner at Ajasteak, located in the hotel. With a Japanese fusion menu, which includes sushi and steak, even the most discerning palates will be satisfied. If you're looking for a nightcap, head up to Vertigo Sky Lounge and check out the panoramic view.
3. EXPLORE
If you're inclined to take in a little culture during your stay, visit the Art Institute of Chicago (artic.edu). With a strong American collection, including iconic works from Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keefe, and a comprehensive modern collection, it's well worth the visit. While in the area, walk over to Millennium Park for some great photo ops by the giant Tiffany bean.
4. DRINK
Start your evening out with Bin 36 (bin36.com). Located downtown, south of the Chicago River, this restaurant is a mecca for wine and cheese lovers. Vino newbie? Opt for a sampling of your choice. Their extensive wine list, including 50 wines by the glass, will suit any wine aficionado and is reasonably priced to boot. We recommend sitting at the Cheese Bar and trying a cheese and wine combo, but if you're interested in a more intimate dining experience, book yourself in to the Cellar.
5. EAT
Steps away from the lobby of Hotel Blake (hotelblake.com) you’ll find Custom House restaurant (customhouse.cc), a place to go for an unforgettable fine dining experience. Headed by critically acclaimed Chef Shawn McClain, the Mediterranean fusion menu offers delightful and creative mains like Red Thai Snapper with Blue Hill Bay Mussels or Bone in Short Rib with Horseradish Cream Puffs. For those with a sweet tooth, don't pass up dessert. Can't decide? Definitely go for the chef's four-dessert selection.
