Day Five: Napa Valley
It’s an early morning rise to enjoy the hotel’s champagne breakfast. We fuel up for our imminent bike tour of the Valley (napavalleybiketours.com) by devouring homemade waffles, fresh fruit and scrambled eggs. While pedalling along behind the rest of the pack, an obvious difference between my husband and me becomes apparent: I am slow and happy in last place, snapping mental pictures of the scenery, while my speedy husband is a sort of aggressive biking fiend! Although riding at different speeds, we cover 24 km and four very different and distinct wineries (there are 225 in the valley), all the while being educated about the ins and outs of California wine by our chatty and lean tour guide. We decide to make use of our newly acquired knowledge of California wines while dining at Hurley’s Restaurant (704-944-2345). My husband, ever the adventurer, experiences their signature wild boar dish. I, on the other hand, devour the classic prime rib. Hurley’s own red cab is poured for us, and I am given a woolen blanket to cuddle as we enjoy our meal under the stars.
