Best Honeymoons

Seventeen of our fave honeymoon places and experiences. By Roseanne Dela Rosa and Alison McGill

Anguilla
Just east of Puerto Rico, amidst the tranquil waters of the Caribbean Sea, lays this petite (approximately 130 sq. km), magical island. But don’t let its size fool you, there’s plenty to do in Anguilla. In fact, it is known as the “cuisine capital of the Caribbean,” with over 70 gastronomic delights to choose from, and is home to more than 30 pristine beaches for lazing away the day.
Why We Love It: Aside from the enchanting scenery, we can’t help but feel drawn to the relaxing and rejuvenating treatments that many of their spas and wellness resorts have to offer. Malakh Day Spa’s top-notch facilities and tempting treatments, such as outdoor massages on the beach, are especially enticing.

Bahamas
As the famous saying goes, “It’s Better in the Bahamas,” and by the look of the postcard-perfect beaches and palm trees, island life certainly seems pretty close to paradise. Located 80 km off the coast of Florida, the Bahamas is a 259,000 sq. km archipelago that is comprised of 700 islands.
Where to Stay: The Graycliff Hotel (graycliff.com) offers a quiet, private and luxurious honeymoon escape. The main house is over 260 years old, which means this spot boasts some serious history as well as some seriously gorgeous scenery—the tropical gardens and Caribbean landscapes are simply breathtaking.

Barcelona
You and your mister are sure to have a jam-packed itinerary when you visit this lively metropolis known for its bustling nightlife, delightful culinary scene and fashionable shops. A few more things we adore about Barcelona: the scenery is magnificent; the city is extremely diverse; and because it’s set between the Mediterranean Sea and the Montjuïc Hills, you can easily go for a refreshing swim or head out for a hike.
Where to Stay: Enjoy the best panoramic view of the city at Hotel Casa Fuster (hotelcasafuster.com), a posh hotel situated at the top of Passeig de Gracia (a popular shopping strip). Complete with gorgeous suites, inspired by Barcelona’s unique architecture, a delicious gourmet restaurant and a beautiful rooftop, you’re definitely in for an ultra-romantic retreat.

Cook Islands
Best known as the setting for hit reality show Survivor, these balmy islands have more to offer than captivating scenery. Located in the South Pacific Ocean, this tropical paradise is home to some of the friendliest people on earth and boasts fresh culinary delights. Our recommendation? Try their signature ika mata dish, which is raw fish marinated in lemon and lime juices, coconut cream and finely chopped herbs. Delish!
Where to Stay: There are a variety of hotels and resorts in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands’ main city. However, for the most romantic suite of all we suggest the Crown Beach Resort (crownbeach.com), a luxurious hotel that offers quaint thatched-roof villas set on the beach.

Hong Kong
For a taste of east meets west, head over to Hong Kong, an entertaining hub comprised of local eateries, historical temples, a bustling nightlife, a majestic harbourfront and a milieu of shops. The best view of the city can be found at The Peak, where you and your mister can take in the incredible view via the Peak Tram (the only way to get there). Once atop, get ready to be wowed by the city’s skyscrapers as well as the tremendous green and hilly backdrop. On ground level, enjoy a shop ’til you drop moment at the Western Market, an Edwardian-style building featuring arts, crafts and fabrics.
Where to Stay: Turn in for the night at Island Shangri-La (shangri-la.com), a luxurious retreat situated in the heart of the city and soaring at 56 floors high. Made up of 531 guest rooms and 34 suites, this sweet sleep not only boasts a luxurious interior but also overlooks Hong Kong’s beautiful skyline (you might not want to sleep!). And, for those with the shopping bug, this towering hotel conveniently rises above the Pacific Place—a prestigious shopping complex.

Iceland
Dramatic landscapes have put Iceland on the map. Prepare to be wowed by the fantastic fjords (gorgeous must-see waterfalls!) as well as the ever-so-tempting hot springs. Other natural and exciting activities include trolling through the lava landscapes, whale watching, seeing the northern lights (in winter) and getting up close and personal with seabirds (it’s said Iceland has some of the world’s biggest colonies of puffins).
Why We Love It: The adventures that you’ll experience at this amazing locale are unlike any other. Activities include horse riding throughout Iceland, kayaking down the wild shores, participating in a glacier tour, midnight golf (the sun shines at midnight in the northern part of Iceland), river rafting through the glacial waters and our favourite—swimming. We recommend taking a dip in the natural hot springs or thermal pools for a completely rejuvenating and relaxing swim.

Ireland
If you and your mister are history junkies, you’ll instantly fall in love with the beautiful castles that this Emerald Isle has to offer. Book any one of their numerous tours and you’ll be able to see the towering sites up close and personal. Must-stop cities include County Clare (experience the best landscapes, seascapes, cliffs, caves and music) and Dublin (the best pubs, museums and cathedrals).
Where to Stay: The city’s lively Temple Bar is home to The Clarence (theclarence.ie) owned by two of Dublin’s most famous native sons—U2’s Bono and The Edge. The musical duo transformed The Clarence, built in 1852, into a boutique hotel in 1996. There are 48 individually designed bedrooms and suites here, including the ultra-luxe penthouse suite, complete with an outdoor hot tub and panoramic rooftop terrace. Two Clarence musts: a meal in The Tea Room restaurant and a pint in The Octagon Bar—Bono’s stomping grounds when in town.

London
From beautiful gardens to exciting shows to historical sites (Buckingham Palace and The Tower of London to be exact), you’re sure to find an exciting activity to check out at this hip and happening locale. Known primarily for their “Royal Family,” London is also home to some of the most amazing spectacles in the world, the London Eye—which has a magnificent view of the city—Leicester Square—which is London’s entertainment hub—and Piccadilly Circus—a famous road junction surrounded by shops galore.
Why We Love It: There’s always something to do! If you and your mister are major art lovers you’ll enjoy London’s best exhibits at either the Tate Modern, British Museum, National Gallery or Natural History Museum. And there are tons of tours for almost anything. If you’re a thrill seeker you’ll want to take part in their Jack the Ripper tour—where they’ll take you across the city to the sites where Jack committed his murders (spooky!). Or, were you part of Beatlemania? There’s a tour that takes you to all the important locations that are connected to the band.

Maui
This Pacific island is utterly romantic and exciting. With 81 enticing beaches to choose from, exciting restaurants to try (their fresh seafood is unlike any other!), fun shopping venues, exciting bars and amazing spas—Maui truly is a magical place for honeymooners. If you and your mister are up for adventure we highly suggest watching (or perhaps even attempting!) the big waves in Honolua Bay. For a more relaxing atmosphere, head to South Maui and watch the sunset at Big Beach.
Where to Stay: The spectacular Fairmont Kea Lani (fairmont.com), the only luxury all-suite and villa oceanfront resort in Hawaii, is the place to stay. The resort is a hop away from a boutique shopping area and is close to adventurous activities like snorkelling, kayaking, sailing and diving. If you like to be pampered, the Spa Kea Lani offers the best rejuvenating treatments the island has to offer.

Mayan Riviera
Located just south of Cancun is this gorgeous area filled with nothing but breathtaking white beaches, gorgeous ancient ruins and the largest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere—perfect for adventurous water activities. What really sets this magical place apart from the rest are the adventure tours—you can head into the heart of the jungle and seeing beautiful wildlife and lush vegetation first hand.
Where To Stay: Check into the new Grand Velas All Suites & Spa Resort (grandvelas.com) for the best spa treatments and tastiest cuisine. Located along the Riviera Maya, this luxurious retreat is home to 491 suites, butler services (a must-try!), and both indoor and outdoor pools. Before you leave, ensure that you book an appointment at the Grand Velas Spa, which is 23,360 sq. m., and surrounded by a lush jungle.

Montreal
For the ultimate getaway, plan a romantic honeymoon at this happening locale. Indulge in a blast from the past as you walk down the cobblestone roads of Old Montreal (art shops, ritzy restaurants and a delicious cupcake shop called Les Glaceurs await you) then head over to the newer part of town, where you can shop ’til you drop on St. Catherine—a popular tourist attraction.
Where to Stay: Opus Montreal (opushotel.com), a heritage building transformed into a luxurious hotel, perfectly reflects the city’s mix of old and new. While the 136 condo-like rooms are all sleek and modern, a portion of the former building (such as an old stairwell) remains intact. The hotel also boasts a gorgeous art-deco restaurant—Koko Restaurant + Bar—with an Asian-infused menu that’s simply irresistible.

New Zealand
Known as the youngest country on the globe, New Zealand more than makes up for its age through its spectacular wildlife, lush forests and awe-inspiring landscape. Nature lovers are ensured an abundance of activities through hiking, sailing and simply sightseeing at one of their many natural sites, which include volcanoes, mountains, beaches and lakes.
Where to Stay: Looking to be at one with nature? We can’t rave enough about Huka Lodge’s (hukalodge.co.nz) amazingly inviting and serene atmosphere. Touted as one of the top retreats in the world, this gorgeous resort is surrounded by nothing but fresh greenery and offers a spectacular view of the Waikato River, which is a gorgeous shade of turquoise. For a romantic getaway, stay in one of their exclusive cottages and indulge in a spa treatment. Or, for an extreme outdoor adventure, choose fishing, horse riding or white-water rafting.

Scotland
Stunning medieval architecture together with a sweeping backdrop of the green mountains makes Edinburgh one of the most picturesque cities in Europe. Delve into the city’s past by exploring dramatic castles and chapels. Or, enjoy strolling down the fashionable streets such as Princes Street, home to funky boutiques, or Multrees Walk, a designer boulevard, including luxe brands like Armani and Louis Vuitton.
Why We Love It: It’s a gorgeous mix of old and new architecture. You can walk through Old Town and get a feel for history through cathedrals and The Royal Museum of Scotland. Or, venture through New Town, which is considered by many to contain the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the world.

Sydney
This fabulous city in the heart of Oz truly is a place that has it all: adventure, arts, culture and amazing people. Star attractions include a sail through Sydney Harbour, trekking around the Olympic Park (home to the 2000 Summer Olympic Games), catching a show at the iconic Opera House, and catching some waves—here you’ll find some of the best surfing in the world.
Where to Stay: Escape to the wilderness for a few nights at the luxurious Blue Mountains Private Safaris (bluemountainsprivatesafaris.com), which is a spectacular 45-minute helicopter ride from West Sydney. Experience an authentic Australian set-up as you camp outdoors (with the luxuries of a cozy bed, duvet and pillow!) and fall asleep under the stars. Watch out for kangaroos!

Turks and Caicos
Surrounded by gorgeous coral reefs, enticing blue waters and enchanting sandy beaches, it’s no wonder this destination is popular with honeymooners. Just a short one-hour flight from Miami, this island is literally a mecca for water lovers. Aquatic adventures, such as snorkelling, diving, swimming and fishing abound.
Where to Stay: Privacy, rest, romance and relaxation can all be found at Grace Bay Club (gracebayclub.com), the first luxury resort in the Turks and Caicos. Set on 11 acres of land, this ritzy property has an area that is dedicated strictly to adults, so that you and your mister can enjoy each other’s company without unwelcome interruptions. For the ultimate splurge, we highly suggest a couples’ only treatment at the renowned Anani Spa, which is an astounding 465 sq. m spa and fitness centre.

Vancouver
City dwellers and nature lovers alike are guaranteed to fawn over Vancouver’s diverse settings and accommodations. Hikers can enjoy exploring Grouse Mountain or the Capilano Suspension Bridge (both are only a one-hour drive from the city), while urbanites are in for an exciting time in the city—shopping in Gastown (home to plenty of local designers) and soaking up the culture on Granville Island (which is brimming with fresh food and independent shops) are just some of the activities available to you. For those with a picky palate, Vancouver is also known for its gastronomic scene, and you will find a wide variety of gourmet restaurants at your fingertips.
Why we Love It: Sans all the exciting activities that you can do in and outside of the city, Vancouver’s waterfront is simply spectacular and, best of all, people-friendly. Head for a jog around the coast, chow down at one of their lakeside restaurants or—our honeymoon must-do—relax on the beach and watch the sunset.

Virgin Islands
Smack dab between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean lay a multitude of gorgeous and natural islands. Unlike many of their island counterparts, the Virgin Islands are unscathed by the booming tourism industry, making them rare and natural gems. Expect gorgeous beaches, delicious food (Johnny cakes, a popular pastry, are a must-try!) and a lively and friendly community.
Why we Love It: The Virgin Islands are the perfect place to island hop! Head to Tortola for white-sandy beaches, escape to Virgin Gorda to experience their luxurious resorts, explore Anegada’s wildlife (from ospreys to flamingos there’s plenty to see here), and end your dreamy honeymoon by visiting Jost Van Dyke, which is known for its restaurants, bars and small shops.
