Where Do I Begin?

Five things to do after you’re engaged. By Roseanne Dela Rosa

You’ve just promised to marry the man of your dreams, so what’s next? Here are five things to do after you’ve said yes!

1) Tell your friends and family. You may not want to take too long, because chances are one of your observant relatives is bound to see that sparkle on your ring finger. You don’t have to announce your news right away, but it’s probably best that they hear it from you instead of an outside source.

2) Choose your bridal party. For some of you, this decision may come easily, but for those of you still deciding, try not to wait too long. Your bridal party is one of your main supports and will help you through the planning stage.

3) Pick a date. Once you’ve settled on a date, it makes it a whole lot easier to book all your vendors.

4) Book your locations. It’s crucial to book both your ceremony and reception venues as early as possible, as they tend to book up fast (especially during the summer!).

5) Make a to-do list. The best way to stay organized is to make a countdown of things to do and when. It may seem like there’s a lot to do (which there is!) but once everything is set according to schedule it makes planning your perfect day easier and less stressful.

I totally disagree on picking your wedding party right away! Especially if your date is far off. Picking you attendants too early can lead to a lot of unnecessary drama if something happens in the friendship.

Also, you should decide on a budget and guest count before looking for a venue. It's also a good idea to decide on formality -- do you want a rustic cabin wedding or a classic Victorian manor wedding?

I agree! I made the mistake of chosing a bridesmaid to early, and now we hardly talk.. my wedding isnt for another year, and I am now faced with the decision of how to tell her we are going with a smaller wedding party.
budget and guest list are definatly an important "first" task to do.

I agree -- kind of!

One of my friends selected me for her wedding party just weeks before her wedding. Those weeks were frantic, hectic, and sucked all the fun out of her wedding for me. If I wasn't her best friend, I would have pulled out of the party.

It's all about planning. Don't whip out the friends' list as soon as the rock is on your finger, but make sure everyone has time to consider and understand the implications.

I am just newly engaged. My fiance and I disagree on a rough time frame for our wedding. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to agree on a wedding date? I would like to get married in the next year, he wants to get married on 2-3 years... Clearly we need to meet in the middle!!!

LeeDeeBee: Firstly, sit down and ask your fiance WHY he wants to wait for the wedding. Maybe he wants to have a big wedding, with several hundred guests, and he knows that you won't have the money in a year? Maybe he wants to plan it to fall around the date of another special event, say an anniversary? Perhaps you just don't have the financial means to make the wedding of your dreams happen within one year. Ask him. I'm sure he'll have no problem answering :) And once THAT is out of the way, you can start thinking about a date!!
