Like the tradition of wearing something old, new, borrowed or blue, pearls have a longstanding history of being the accessory of choice for brides. Simple, lustrous and beautiful, pearls are classics with timeless elegance. But what is it about a pearl that makes it a natural fit for your wedding?
Part of a pearl's appeal lies in its very nature. "Pearls have been perceived as something romantic and dreamy, predating the use of diamonds and other gems. Is it because they come from the ocean? Perhaps, but there is definitely a warmth about a pearl that people can relate to," says Michael Clarke, Divisional Vice-President of Fine Jewellery at Birks.
What's the latest way to accessorize with pearls? For a thoroughly Coco Chanel-inspired look, accessorize a bare neck with ropes of cultured pearls in strands of various colours and lengths, stretching from your collarbone to your cleavage. If you have a dress with a plunging neckline, Clarke suggests a pair of dramatic dangling earrings. If you want the hippest look in the gem world, try some Keshi pearls on for size. These naturally formed gems are coveted both for their unusual shape and colour tone, ranging from white to black to various shades of grey. If you want real pearls, be prepared to pay. Clarke reports a single strand of Keshi pearls starts at $2,500.
