Trying to balance work and family obligations with wedding planning can result in a lot of sleepless nights, which is exactly why we turned to best-selling author Jane Green for some expert advice. Green knows all about the juggling act—she recently remarried, and her blended family now includes six children (four of whom are under the age of five!) and two dogs! We sat down with Green when she was in town promoting her latest book Dune Road (which would make a great honeymoon read, by the way), and she offered some truly inspiring words of wisdom. Here are her tips for planning the wedding of your dreams and keeping the home fires burning long after the big day.
On the wedding itself:
Green insists that her second wedding wasn’t about the event itself or trying to please both sets of parents, it was about celebrating her and her husband’s love for one another. There were only 19 people in attendance (as opposed to the 200+ guests at her first wedding), and the entire event was completely “reflective of who we are as people,” notes Green. “Our personalities were stamped all over it.” Indeed, Green handled all the decor, floral arrangements, etc. herself.
On involving the children:
If you have kids (or stepkids) encourage them to get involved in the planning process, but don’t force them to participate against their will. “Give them choices and be sensitive,” advises Green. In her case, she encouraged her stepdaughters to choose their own outfits for the big day, and her eldest son walked her down the aisle. Green also notes that you should reassure your children that nothing will change after the wedding. “Life as normal will resume—if anything it will be better!” she exclaims.
On maintaining post-wedding bliss:
Place less emphasis on big occasions (holidays, birthdays and anniversaries) and celebrate your love on a daily basis with affectionate gestures, advises Green. “Love is a verb. It requires acting in kind and considerate ways every day.”
