Wallet-Friendly Travel Tips

How to get the most out of your vacation without breaking the bank. By Stephanie Gray

With the big day taking up the majority of your funds, making a few sacrifices is par for the course. Cementing yourself indoors may be thrifty, but is far from realistic. Whether you’re taking a much-needed R&R weekend, visiting the out-of-town future in-laws or catching up with the girls via a shopping excursion, there are simple ways to save money without slashing your vacay experience.

1. Rent a Car
It sounds counterproductive, considering the cost of fuel these days, but renting a car is more cost-effective than taking your gas-guzzling SUV or decade-old ride. Plus you don’t have to worry about extended wear and tear on your own vehicle. Check out keystogreen.com for links to agencies with eco-friendly cars.

2. Make Meals
Part of the excitement of travelling is experiencing different cuisine. But who says you have to dine out at every meal? Consider making your own meals part of the time. A hotel room with a kitchenette will save you plenty, especially if you’re making an extended visit. Experiment by shopping for local foods—you might discover new tastes you’ll want to try at home.

3. Get Physical
Forgo those costly cabs and slip on a pair of chic flats while you traipse around town. Have a fair distance to go and hate public transportation? Rent a bike. It’s cute, fun and très stylish. Plus all your running around gives you a great excuse to indulge in luxurious eats.

4. Time Travel
Dying to see the latest museum exhibit or visit a must-see art gallery, but can’t justify the cost? You’d be surprised how many museums offer admission at a reduced rate during specific times. Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum offers a 50% discount on Friday night, while New York’s Museum of Modern Art has no-cost Target Free Fridays.

5. Bring Your Own Booze
In Ontario, Nova Scotia and Alberta many restaurants are joining in on this trend that allows customers to bring their own wine. You will be charged a corkage fee, but if you’re like most diners, alcohol is a killer on the bill, so toting your own will save you a few bucks. Find out what restaurants participate at bringmywine.ca.
