Tuscan Treasure

Italy is one of the hottest honeymoon destinations. Our pick of the dreamiest place to stay: Adler Thermae Spa Resort. By Alison McGill

It’s not until you’ve been to Tuscany and indulged in all the incredible things this area of Central Italy has to offer (food, wine, history and plush accommodations) that you can truly believe how amazing it is. Vineyards, olive groves, Cypress trees and rolling terra cotta hills dot the landscape of the romantic Tuscan region, which is brimming with charming villages. Renowned as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, art is also a huge focus here—most famously in Florence, the region’s capital.

On your honeymoon, rest, relaxation and pampering are no doubt on the top of your to-do list, and Tuscany has just the place to do that. Located in the heart of the countryside, Adler Thermae Spa Resort is famous as one of the best wellness retreats in the world. All your needs are catered to here: locally grown gourmet cuisine, a spectacular spa (focused on wellness and fitness) complete with a naturally fed thermal water pool, and cozy rooms boasting a spectacular view of the Orcia Valley. Quite simply it’s heaven on earth.

Located a 45-minute drive south of Siena (or about a two-hour drive from Florence; two-and-a-half hours from Rome), Adler Thermae is built on the site of an ancient thermal water spring in the tiny, romantic village of Bagno Vignoni (a UNESCO world Heritage site). In ancient times, it’s said that the Etruscans and Romans travelled for miles to bathe in the hot, healing waters. It is these same mineral and sulphur-rich waters which feed Adler’s sprawling outdoor swimming pool and lie at the heart of the resort’s extensive spa and wellness treatments.

At Adler, the spa menu is presented in a 35-page booklet and inside you will find detailed descriptions of every type of massage therapy imaginable, numerous water therapies, facials, body treatments, Ayurveda and Oriental treatments, wellness counselling, naturopathic and medical checkups, hair services and nutritional advice. My treatments of choice when I visited: the underground salt bath, a milk & honey body scrub and wrap and a melatonin facial, all amazing!  There are also numerous fitness programs available where you can sign up for everything from yoga to Pilates, from biking to trekking. You could literally stay for a week at Adler and not experience half of what they have to offer!

The Tuscan villa-style hotel is quaint and cozy, with 90 rooms, each of which boasts a million-dollar view of the breathtaking Tuscan countryside. All resort stays include meals, and the food at Adler is mind-blowing and is, of course, traditional Tuscan fare. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the villa’s atrium, and each meal offers a dizzying array of options. Dinner courses range from three to seven courses with a killer wine list (of course, this is Tuscany!) and an epic self-serve antipasto buffet (I think there were 25 types of olive oil alone at the buffet!) stocked with the freshest fare harvested from the surrounding area.
