True Love in Nevis

This tiny Caribbean treasure abounds with romantic getaways. By Jami Moran

Tucked away in the Leeward Islands of the West Indies archipelago you’ll find the island of Nevis. Though it’s only eight miles long and six miles wide, this tiny jewel of an island features a natural beauty that is unparalleled. Its green foothills support tropical rainforests, secluded valleys, historic plantations and the remains of sugar-cane fields while its turquoise waters lap palm-fringed beaches. As a tribute to the white clouds surrounding the island’s central volcanic peak, Spanish explorers called Nevis, “Nuestra Senora de las Nieves” (Our Lady of the Snows).
Even more dreamy than the scenery, is Nevis’ romantic history which spans all the way back from the 18th century to present day. As legend has it, in the spring of 1785, a swashbuckling young Captain by the name of Horatio Nelson and a pretty young widow named Frances “Fanny” Nisbet found true love at Montpelier estate, where they later married. The tradition continues today as love birds flock to the island to create their own romantic history.

1. Historical Hideaway
Luckily, if you’d like to follow in the footsteps of Horatio and Fanny, the Montpelier Plantation Inn still exists today. Romantics at heart can take advantage of the inn’s Island Romance package, which includes four nights in an upgraded Canopy room. Look forward to luxuries like candlelight dinners overlooking the dancing lights of Charlestown and St. Kitts, champagne picnics on the beach and sensual couples massages. Enjoy a full English breakfast every morning with fresh-squeezed juice and homemade breads and jams, daily afternoon tea with homemade cakes and scones, and fresh island fruit in your room daily. The package also features nightly turn-down service, transportation to the hotel’s private beach with lounge chairs, showers and sun shelters, snorkelling and tennis and complimentary internet services.
