Let’s face it, nobody wants to step out of bed onto a cold, drafty floor—that’s why you have to decide on the perfect carpet for your love nest. Carpets insulate, muffle sound and prevent slipping, and they can also be an important aspect of your decor.
Here are some important factors to consider when searching for your ideal carpet:
Location: For a high-traffic area (think family room, stairs, hallway), durability should be first and foremost on your mind. A dense, short carpet with heavier pile is your best bet for any area prone to lots of wear and tear. Contrarily, a bedroom is the perfect place for a lush, velvety carpet. Generally, steer clear of carpets for bathrooms and kitchens. It’s nearly impossible to keep them clean.
Colour: Neutral colours are a popular choice for carpets, providing an ideal background for furnishings, drapery, artwork, etc. On the other hand, a brightly coloured or heavily patterned carpet can serve as an important decorative element and make a bold statement in any room.
Material: Carpets come in various materials, both natural and synthetic. Wool, polyester and nylon are some of the most common fabrications. However, less traditional materials include sisal and sea grass. These materials are extremely durable, but not as soft as wool.
Whatever pattern or fabrication you decide on, try to spend as much money as you can on your carpeting. Higher quality equals higher cost, but it’s worth the investment. Your feet will thank you.
