It’s every woman’s dilemma. What to pack? If you don’t bring enough, Murphy’s Law says you’re guaranteed to need that piece. If you pack too much you’ll find yourself shovelling over money for your overweight baggage or, gasp, not having enough room for souvenirs. Luckily there are experts who have got packing down to an art. Lin Rockwell, owner of Phoenix, a clothing boutique in Vancouver, has narrowed the list of what you should bring with five simple organizing solutions.
1. Choose a Colour Theme
This doesn’t mean only bring X-coloured items, but pieces that can work in harmony. Think mix and match. Black and white is always a good start for your key pieces, i.e. shorts, skirts and pants. Add a few brightly coloured items from the season and you’re set. Co-ordinating with any other neutral set will work too, like ivory/khaki, white/caramel or navy/white.
2. Dress Code
You’ll likely need a bit from both ends of the spectrum, depending on your itinerary. What you will need to decide is just how dressy or casual you need your pieces to be. Remember casual never means sloppy (hold the joggers, please), while dressing up in Manhattan is very different than in Jamaica, so keep in mind your destination.
3. Travel-Friendly Fabric
This is a must! Then proceed to hang up your pieces as soon as you arrive to start the de-wrinkling process. Do you really want to lug out an iron unnecessarily?
4. Carry-on Emergency
In preparation for a potential airline mishap, consider packing some basics in your carry-on, such as a bathing suit, versatile sundress, a few jewellery pieces, a change of underwear and non-liquid (or airline compliant) makeup. A pashmina is also a great piece to bring on the plane. It will keep you warm en route and double as a wrap on land.
5. Airline Restrictions
Call your airline beforehand to find out just what restrictions they have on size, weight and amount of luggage. This often changes with carrier. A good rule of thumb is 50 lbs for check-in and no deeper than 20 inches for carry-on.
