Traditions for Today

Sharon Naylor’s latest book tells you how to tweak traditions for today. By Tanya Pressé

Author of over 30 wedding planning books, Sharon Naylor is definitely knowledgeable in the wedding realm and in her latest read, she alerts brides to the secrets of an ultramodern wedding. From the beginning, Your Wedding Your Way makes it known that weddings are meant to reflect whom the bride and groom are as individuals. Naylor offers a guide for tweaking traditions—or forgetting them altogether if it suits your fancy—and how to appease those people (need we say parents?) who are scandalized by any shift from convention.

A Step-by-Step Process
Naylor goes through the wedding planning process gradually, ensuring that brides know to include all interested parties. Quizzes and organizers in the book are super-helpful as they facilitate a smoother planning process. Plus, the breakdown of the book into chapters mirrors the wedding-day process, right from the planning stage (and trying to stay on budget—eek!) to the wedding day itself and even the events thereafter (like trendy post-wedding parties, brunches and the like!).

Our Must-Read Moments
1. We love the Tweak section of the book, which offers suggestions on how to modernize nearly every bit of the wedding while still keeping some tradition intact! For example, this twist on sealing your vows with a kiss is très romantic: “Kiss your fingertips and then place them on your partner’s wrist so that the pulse carries it straight to his or her heart.”

2. The trendy DIY section pinpoints exact areas where you can be über-creative! Try crafting flower hairpins for the bridal party.

3. The entire chapter on spending time with your guests is a must-read since this is often forgotten in the rush! Naylor reminds that this is where much wedding-day happiness can be derived and offers unique ideas on how to ensure you get some quality guest time!
