8 Tips to Find Your Dream Dress

Gown designer Adele Wechsler shares eight simple tips for finding the dress of your dreams. By Roseanne Dela Rosa

Finding your dream dress is no easy task. To help ease your decision along the way, Weddingbells sought out gown shopping advice from renowned wedding gown designer Adele Wechsler (adelewechsler.com). Known for her beautiful destination wedding gowns and with years of fashion experience behind her, Adele shares these eight tips on how you can find the right gown for you:

1. Do your research. You need to find a direction so you can select distinctive designers who reflect a sensibility that you relate to. There is an overwhelming amount of choice: try and stay focused on the mood and look you’re going for.

2. Don’t overdo it. Don’t cram too many stores into one shopping day. You don’t want to risk “gown burnout” and making a rushed decision in order to be done with the process. You’re making one of your most important wedding-day purchases – take your time so you don’t regret it!

3. Know your budget. Minimize stress by knowing how much you want to spend from the very beginning. Select designers and retailers within your budget so you don’t fall in love with a gown out of reach – although you could always eliminate a few florals, cut the desserts or chop a few guests off the list!

4. Consider your day. The location, venue, season and time of day play an important role. The bride’s gown sets the mood and tone for the wedding and should be appropriate to the setting. An exotic location calls for a gown that’s light and airy, while a ballroom would call for a more formal gown, a gown with more volume or presence.

5. Pay attention to fabrics. In the same way that different shades look better on different people, the same can be said for different textures. Some brides look better with the brightness that comes from high-sheen satin fabrics, others need the softness that matte textures provide.

6. Flatter your figure. Select a silhouette that works with your body type. Don’t overwhelm yourself in fabric. Remember, this is your day not the gown’s, and less may be more.

7. Show YOUR personality. Your wedding day is about YOU, not your gown. Your guests should see you, and everything that’s wonderful about you should outshine your gown. If you only hear comments about the gown itself when you try it on and nothing about how it enhances you, then it’s not the one for you.

8. Colour is important. Wedding gowns come in many different tones from unnatural bleached whites to softer silk whites through to shades of ivory and champagne. Other colours like blush and platinum are also options. Select a shade that enhances your skin tone and brings out your personal glow.
