Just like fashion, trends come and go in the wonderful world of tableware. The good news is there has never been a better time to register for your dining essentials—there are so many fabulous patterns and designs to choose from, you will have a hard time narrowing it down to just one (or two!). To put you in the know, and help you slim down your shopping list, we’ve made a hit list that features five of the biggest trends happening in tableware.
1. Designer goods. Vera Wang, Kate Spade, Missoni, Calvin Klein, Zandra Rhodes and Versace are not only some of the biggest names in fashion, but also in tableware. The great thing about designer tableware? It’s more affordable than clothing and will last you a lifetime! Also, this season Marc Jacobs has stamped his name on his very own line for Wedgwood! The patterns are very Marc—charming and a little bit retro. Watch for a new line from renowned bridal designer Monique Lhuillier for Royal Doulton coming later this fall.
2. Chef wares. Following in the footsteps of fashion’s biggest names are food’s biggest names. Jamie Oliver, Tyler Florence, Nigella Lawson, and now Brit bad-boy Gordon Ramsay all have their own lines of signature tableware. I think foodies like Ramsay partnering with companies like Royal Doulton is a match made in heaven—for them, presentation is key, and they are the obvious choice to design pieces that work beautifully with food.
3. Unique shapes. Square plates, teardrop olive dishes, daisy-shaped dessert plates…anything that is not traditional is hip. These items will look ultra fresh on your table. If you are worried about different-shaped items being too trendy, register for just a few smaller ones—dessert bowls, a teapot, and a cream and sugar set are a great way to subtly shake up your table.
4. White. Crisp, clean and fuss-free, white tableware is timeless. I suggest going all white for your formal pattern—you can dress it up, or dress it down, and basically style it to fit any type of party or occasion. For a more traditional white, select a pattern banded in platinum or gold; for a more modern feel, pick one with subtle texture or detailing.
5. Antique Chic. Any kind of pattern featuring toile, chintz and bold, oversize flowers is hot. Think of your Grandmother’s china she served you Christmas dinner on—it was probably lovely, lady-like and quite traditional. Chances are she had a pattern that has been around for years, one that’s timeless and never loses its splendour. Consider registering for a pattern like Grandmother’s, but also for one that complements it, so you have a mix and match set that will look hip and haute, and infuse your home with a touch of something old.
