Attendants play a key role in your wedding day, but how do you decide who to lean on? By Sara Duck

While weddings are joyous moments, they’re also highly stressful events. Your bridesmaids should be there to alleviate all the bad stuff and offer shoulders to cry on when wedding details become overwhelming. Think of your girls as guardian angels hovering over you during every step of the planning process, just waiting to lend a wing.

History of the Maids
The tradition of bridesmaids dates back to the ancient Roman era, when a group of 10 females was elected by a bride-to-be, to escort her to the groom’s village. By gathering around her, the women protected the bride from evil spirits or from money-hungry suitors who wanted to steal her dowry. Today, women choose their closest friends and family members for their bridal party, not to ward away evil, but to represent who they are and to denote important women in their lives.

The Right Girls
There’s no question choosing your maids can be tricky business. It is a task that should not be rushed, nor taken lightly—we’ve all heard tales of how female friends divorce after being involved in a wedding party! Before you make your choice, be aware of the responsibilities that lie ahead and consider whether the candidates you choose are up for the task.

How Many?
Deciding on the number of attendants depends on the type of wedding you are planning. If you are having an intimate wedding at a small venue, a gaggle of six bridesmaids will appear out of place.

The Main Maid
Once you choose your essential girls, how do you further narrow the field to select your maid of honour? This decision is tough and can cause sleepless nights. Never default to the "honour system"—choosing a person simply because you feel obligated, or because you were her top player. Your best girl should be someone who’s integral in your life, a person who will always be special to you.

The Other Women
Most girls will understand the intricacies of your big day and won’t be hurt if they’re left out of your final decision. Get creative by incorporating them in other ways. Ask them to deliver a reading at your ceremony. At the reception, there’s room for special speeches, toasts and poems.

Being surrounded by "girl power" on your wedding day will make everything a breeze. After all, this is your day, and your bridesmaids are there to make sure you have the most marvellous time in the world.
