Five tips to turn your newlywed boudoir into a sensual retreat.
You’re soon to be a newlywed, and setting up your nest can be an incredibly romantic bonding experience. The most important room in the house? The bedroom, of course! Here are five simple tips to transform your room into a permanent honeymoon suite.
1. Make it Sumptuous
If you’re going for romance, more is better. Whether it’s curtains, a throw rug or a lamp shade, make it rich. That doesn’t necessarily mean expensive, either. A budget-conscious duvet cover, chosen in a sumptuous pattern and colours, can become the focal point of your decor.
2. Nesting Material
You want to make your bedroom as comfortable as possible. A large, overstuffed chair is a wonderful luxury. You can also furnish your bed with lots of pillows in a variety of sizes. Add generously-sized bedside tables so that your favourite books, a mug of coffee, candles, or a clock are within easy reach. Invest in a headboard to add drama as well as comfort to your bedroom. Funky takes on the romantic headboard include an antique wrought-iron garden gate or a length of picket fence.
3. Add a Little Fantasy
Your bedroom is the one place where you should be able to fulfil every wish and feel good doing it. How do you create your own personal fantasy? Take a cue from the most delightful places you’ve visited. For instance, if your idea of heaven is the suite you stayed in during your Jamaican honeymoon, adopt the sunny colours of the country for your bedroom colour palette. Make your own mosquito net for the bed, draping white netting from a hoop hung close to the ceiling–and voila–the foundations of a fantasy.
4. Let There Be Light
Give yourself the luxury of being able to choose the intensity of light in your bedroom at any given time. By having various lighting options, you can change the mood of the room instantly. Replace conventional wall switches with dimmers. Look for lamps with a tri-level feature. Try a variety of bulb wattages and colours before settling on a single look. For the most intimate atmosphere, a few lit candles is the classic choice.
5. Tidy Trick
Any room loses its appeal when it looks messy. To avoid this, allow yourself adequate clothing storage. If your bedroom’s closet isn’t large enough, consider rotating clothes seasonally, storing out-of-season wear somewhere else.
