Style at Home

How do you marry your love of toile with his desire for crisp white walls? Expert tips on how to merge your conflicting home aesthetics into one. By Sara Duck

The merging of two different and distinct styles into your newlywed pad can be (in a word) exasperating. No need to call a decorating intervention just yet, though, because we’ve got the lowdown on all your styling needs. Here are four things to consider when styling your new (twosome) space.

Budget
Your budget is the most important factor when it comes to decorating your new home. Moving into a new house can be overwhelming, but by setting up a budget for each room, you can prioritize where the money will be spent. If your dollars are limited, Weddingbells’ home and registry expert Catherine Doherty recommends purchasing one special piece that will become the focal point of each room. Remember, it’s impossible to fully decorate every room right away, so think of it as a work in progress. If you’re looking for a quick fix, paint is an inexpensive way to create a great atmosphere.

Style
Choosing your own style can be tricky, and so some compromises will have to be made. On the other hand, this is also an exciting time for the two of you to create your own signature look. When it comes to settling on style, Doherty suggests pulling inspiration from the common interests that brought you together in the first place. If you and the hubby adore cooking, focus your attention on the kitchen first. If you prefer quiet movie nights, create a home theatre with cozy touches. Stuck for style? Let the places you’ve visited together, or restaurants you love, be the muse for your new home. The best style advice? Have fun and make it personal.

Space
There’s no point trying to force a large sectional couch into a tiny condo. So before you start hunting for furniture, consider how much space you have. Take the time to measure, and don’t be afraid to bring your measuring tape shopping with you. If you don’t have oodles of room in your new home, consider creating mini sections away from your main living area. This may just be a gorgeous chair and ottoman in a small nook, but it creates depth, and a place to relax away from it all.

Small Details
Don’t underestimate small (but powerful) details like decor accessories. Think pillows, throws, mirrors and frames—these are a cost effective way to make your home chic. “Focusing on the small details also adds warmth to your home,” Doherty says. “It makes the room look less like a showroom.” Don’t be afraid to personalize your space by framing those gorgeous wedding photos, or adorable childhood shots.
