Stemware Basics

Are you in need of a little stemware 101? Take notes—glass class is in session. By Melanie Simon

Coupe
The old-fashioned coupe, or champagne saucer, was originally used for champagne. Take a break from wedding planning and enjoy a fabulous cocktail in the coupe’s broad and shallow bowl.
Try: Amaretto Sunrise Crush - 1 1/2 oz. Amaretto, 3/4 oz. Grenadine, 1 tsp. Lemon Juice, 4 oz. Orange Juice.

Flute
Toast your blissful marriage with these tall, slim glasses. Recommended for sparkling wines, the narrow mouth lets the wine’s bubbly goodness linger in the glass.
Try
: Caribbean Champagne - Fill glass with chilled Champagne, add 1/2 tsp. Rum, 1/2 tsp. Banana Liqueur, 1 slice Banana.

Cocktail Glass
Also called the martini glass, its cone-shaped bowl discourages the separation of the cocktail ingredients, and the stem keeps the drink nice and cool as you make the rounds during your reception.
Try: Wedding Belle - 1 oz. Dubonnet, 1 oz. Gin, 1/2 oz. Cherry Brandy, 1 oz. Orange Juice.

Margarita Glass
Fun, girly times with your bridesmaids usually include margaritas, daiquiris and other fruity cocktails served in these broad, salt-rimmed glasses.
Try: Grand Margarita - 1 oz. Sauza Conmemorativo Anejo, 3/4 oz. Grand Marnier, 1 part Lime Juice.

Snifter
This glass’ round, pear-shaped bowl and short stem allow you to warm your brandy or cognac. Cradle your after-dinner drink in the palm of your hand and take in a mellow evening.
Try: Brandy Ice - Blend 1 1/2 oz. Brandy, 1/2 oz. White Crème de Cacao, 1/2 cup of Ice, 2 scoops Vanilla Ice Cream. Top with chocolate shavings.

Red Wine
With an oversized, rounded bowl, this glass is excellent for avid red wine-drinking couples that love to savour their wine’s succulent flavour and aroma.
Try
: Sangria Shabbabe - 2 oz. Red Wine, 1 oz. White Wine, 1 oz. Orange Juice, 1 tbsp. Sugar, 1 tbsp. Lemon Juice, 4 oz. 7-Up.

White Wine
A narrower bowl than the red wine glass, straight or tulip-shaped sides and a long stem allow the wine to stay chilled while your party heats up.
Try
: One Exciting Night - 1 oz. Orange Juice, 1/3 oz. Vermouth, 1/3 oz. Gin.

Sherry Glass
This small, 2-ounce, narrow-stemmed glass is a nice choice for aromatic drinks like sherry, aperitifs, ports, layered shooters and liqueurs to sip after a (pleasurable?) meal with the in-laws.
Try: Sancho Panza - 2 oz. Cream Sherry, 3/4 oz. Campari, 1 dash Angostura Bitters.

Hurricane Glass
Aptly named after its hurricane lamp shape, this tall, distinctive glass is perfect for tropical and exotic honeymoon drinks on the beach.
Try: Pink Paradise - 1 1/2 oz. Coconut Flavoured Rum, 1 oz. Amaretto, 3 oz. Cranberry Juice, 1 1/2 oz. Pineapple Juice.

Parfait
Available in a variety of bowl or hurricane-style shapes, this wide-rimmed glass is best for serving your scrumptious ice cream and pudding desserts.
Try: Tennessee Waltz - Blend 1 1/4 oz. Peach Schnapps, 2 oz. Pineapple Juice, 1 oz. Passion Fruit Juice, 4 oz. Vanilla Ice Cream.
