You’ve planned your wedding to be full of personal touches that perfectly reflect you and your mister and the love that you share. Everything from the guest list to the flowers to the favours has been carefully thought out—this wedding isn’t about you: it’s about all your nearest and dearest. Have you considered carrying your community spirit over to your registry? By choosing a charitable registry, not only will you make gift-giving fun and personal for your guests, you’ll also be making a difference.
The Canadian Hunger Foundation (CHF), a non-profit organization that targets poor rural communities in developing countries, now offers a special program that allows you to choose gifts for these communities on behalf of your family and friends. The program, dubbed Gifts That Matter, lets you register for anything from seeds and goats to clean water and malaria kits—all benefitting one of more than 800 projects in more than 40 countries. Ranging in price from $10 to $500, each gift is designed to meet the specific needs of a particular community. There are benefits for your guests, too. After purchase, the organization will send each guest a tax receipt and a personal greeting card announcing the special gift they’ve supplied.
As a way of spreading joy for their August nuptials, Anita Grace and Vikas Nagaraj were inspired to set up a charitable gift registry after purchasing several birthday and Christmas gifts from the organization. The Ottawa couple was attracted to this particular charity because they feel it offers a more tangible way of making a difference than a monetary donation.
It can also be a lot of fun. Says Grace: “Receiving a pair of donkeys for your wedding provides amusement for you and your guests as well as an innovative solution to a global problem.”
