Smashbox Beauty Tips

Expert makeup advice from Lori Taylor, Smashbox’s Pro Lead Artist. By Stephanie Gray

We recently caught up with Smashbox’s Pro Lead Artist Lori Taylor, to ask her about getting your dream look, what products you need to carry in your clutch and a beauty splurge you need to make.

Weddingbells: What's the best way to find your bridal beauty look?
Lori Taylor: I always suggest flipping through their favourite magazine. Of course bridal magazines are best for bridal makeup. Also, recreating a look from their favourite celeb or even a celeb people mention they resemble.

WB: What's a really fresh and classic makeup look you would suggest for a traditional bride?
LT: I call this the blushing bride. Natural lips one or two shades darker than the natural lip colour (to insure that it shows in black and white photos). Sticking with matte natural tones for the crease, depending on the skin tone, matte peachy/pink for the lid, and dark brown liner at the lash line to enhance natural eye shape. Cheeks should be a natural flush and be in the same colour family as the lip.

WB: When it comes to choosing an eye colour palette – what's a do and what's a don't?
LT: It’s your big day and if you have the confidence and know-how any colour combo can be great. I usually say avoid shimmer under the brow. And if you are very fair avoid colours with an abundance of red—this can make the eyes look tired.

WB: What should you use to ensure your makeup lasts the whole day/night?
LT: Using oil-free moisturizer, and of course prepping the skin for the foundation application with a primer!

WB: Summer brides – how can they avoid the melted look?
LT: Using the idea that less is more. Concealer and powder will almost always do, in this case. Especially Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder since it mimics natural radiant skin, has ample coverage and NEVER looks caked on.

WB: Lipstick, lip gloss or a combination of both?
LT: Yes—love to layer the lips!!! It will extend the wear of the colour.

WB: What beauty items should you carry with you for touch-ups?
LT: I always give my brides a touch-up kit that consists of lip gloss, lipstick and a touch-up powder. Love a light blush like O-Glow and O-Gloss. It looks great on every bride.

WB: If you're going to splurge on one makeup product, what should you buy?
LT: A Photo Finish Foundation Primer. You’ll use this on the big day and all the days that follow!

WB: What's the secret to achieving flawless skin?
LT: Again, the less-is-more, and applying makeup with foundation brush.

WB: Tips if you're opting to do your makeup yourself?
LT: Practices…and snap a few pics. Play and have your friend give an honest critique!
