With the chill of winter in the air, we all look forward to crawling into a warm, comfy bed at the end of the day. However, with so many options, creating the most comfortable bed possible has become somewhat of a science. There’s feather vs. down, egyptian vs. pima, and let’s not get started on thread count. So how do you choose? Cathy and Martha Bull, owners of Toronto’s Feather Factory, have 25 years of experience helping newlyweds make informed decisions when it comes to bedding. According to these experts, here’s a few things to keep in mind when buying bedroom products.
1. Remember that you’re actually shopping for a good night’s sleep. Examine both you and your partner’s sleep patterns before purchasing your bedding. Do you like the bed warmer than your beau does? If so, should you be looking at a duvet with less down on his side and more on your side? Do you like the feel of crisp sheets or silky sateen? Is wrinkle-free bedding important to you? These are all factors that can affect your sleep habits.
2. What’s your style? Consider what kind of bedroom ambience you’re trying to create. Do you prefer a serene, soft environment or a lively, colourful space? What is your favourite colour? Are you working with a favourite painting or lamp? It’s easier to decorate around what you already love, even if it is only a picture cut out of a magazine.
3. Invest in your bedding and your bedroom. Build a space that you can enjoy for many years. Think about your lifestyle. If you travel a lot and want to be able to incorporate fabrics or paintings from your trips, choose window coverings, bedskirts and duvet covers that are a solid colour. You can easily change the ambience in your bedroom with a pashmina from India or pillows from Paris. Keep your bedroom style flexible, so you always have room for personal items.
