When rice got the wedding-day boot—and we didn’t revert back to Italy’s olden days of throwing candy and coins—confetti desperately needed a rebirth. Throwing paper pieces soon became a timeless tradition to celebrate newlyweds before they drove away. Since nuptials are all about personal taste, here are five alternative ideas to tossing tiny cut-outs at the bride and groom.
- Petals
As a pretty substitute, flower petals are aromatic, light and romantic. Make an extra eco-friendly choice and choose real over synthetic; dried petals are natural and biodegradable.
- Bubbles
Little bottles of bubbles are cheap and whimsical, giving everyone—especially the younger crowd—a fun way to say goodbye. Buy in bulk to personalize your order with embellishments like inscriptions and ribbon. Bonus: Your photos get an added glow when the light catches these spectacular suds.
- Birdseed
Throwing rice became a health concern for birds; to get the same effect without causing harm, opt for tossing seeds. Give invitees petite pouches of feed in eco-friendly sacs for your departure. Bonus: Flocks do the cleaning up for you!
- Sparklers
Particularly lovely during a nighttime affair, sparklers add a magical radiance to your evening. They are incredibly inexpensive and typically sold by the dozen, so each guest can simultaneously wave a wand to give you and your mister a dazzling exit.
- Bells
Chimes are a charming choice for your farewell, since you yourself are a wedding belle! Purchase mini cymbals or bells in different colours, shapes and styles; these are a beautiful way to ring in your marriage.

If you really like the idea of confetti consider having your guests toss biodegradable confetti. It melts away in the rain but is closer to the real paper confetti once used 20 years ago. But be very careful of the vibrant color confetti - when wet, it will stain clothing!
Another environmentaly friendly option is small lavender buds. The bonus is that it provides a nice, light scent to your wedding celebrations.
Cheers!
