If you love a challenge, then we definitely suggest unleashing your inner scavenger and hitting the sample sale circuit or the consignment shops. And don’t be discouraged if what you uncover isn’t exactly what you pictured. Keep in mind that a dress can always be altered, and several brides we know have turned less-than-perfect bargains into fabulous frocks with the help of a talented seamstress. The same goes for that hand-me-down gown your mother or sister wore. By removing the sleeves or shortening the hemline, you’ll have a whole new dress for hardly any money. Here’s another helpful hint for you: many bridesmaids’ dresses by noteworthy designers such as Vera Wang and Lela Rose are available in white and ivory shades, and they’re much more affordable than their bridal counterparts. We’re especially fond of this georgette v-neck gown by After Six (see dessy.com for details). If you’re planning a destination wedding or informal garden party, this dress is perfect for you—and your budget will thank you!

Also check out The Brides' Project (Toronto) or The Bridal Garden (New York) for samples donated from bridal salons -- their proceeds go to good causes like cancer research and kids' programs, and you get designer dresses for a fraction of the price!
