Romancing Your Home

Create a romantic atmosphere for every room in your house with our easy-to-follow tips and tricks. By Roseanne Dela Rosa

Natural Lighting
Rather than dimming the lights, make use of all your great candles and scatter them throughout the room for instant romance. Create the impression that you’ve escaped to a tropical location with the use of scented candles with a beach-inspired fragrance. We suggest: India Hicks Island Night Scented Candle ($42, Crabtree & Evelyn), which has hints of jasmine, green island palms and orange blossom nectar.

Gizmos and Gadgets
Turn them all off, or leave them out of your rooms—especially the bedroom! Having a television in your boudoir is a major distraction, so if you do have one, ensure that you move it to a place that’s not right in front of your bed—that way the television does not become a focal point in your room. Move it to a location that is a bit more remote like the corner of your bedroom. When you’re creating a romantic atmosphere, it’s also best to keep the clocks and phones tucked away in the kitchen or even your office space.

Invest in Sheets, Pillows and Throws
The bedroom is probably the most likely place you’ll want to create a romantic atmosphere, which is why it’s best to invest in beautiful and inviting sheets—especially the silky ones. Pillows and throws both on the floor and on the couch are a great way to make a stark place look appealing—but be mindful of too much clutter, which can be a catalyst for a definite mood-breaker.

Colour Choice
They say that many, if not all, colours have a certain symbolism and emotion connected with them. For example, red is seen as a classic hue that evokes emotions of passion and fire—so when it comes to decoration or even picking out certain items like pillows—you’ll want to keep this shade in mind. You don’t have to go all red, this example (pictured left) is one great way Designers Guild has subtly combined colours together and created a perception of a cozy yet romantic bedroom.

Wall Decoration
You may want to avoid wall art that’s too crazy or too busy, as controversial wall art tends to take the attention away from the whole room. Invest in pieces that will go with your atmosphere and leave the more funky ones for the hallways.

Romancing the Kitchen
Believe it or not, the kitchen is also a great space to create a romantic atmosphere. You can enjoy a candlelight dinner for two, just be mindful of the types of food you should serve, as some dishes are made for romance. Find out why two in the kitchen in a surefire recipe for romance.
