Romantic Rendezvous

Looking for a luxe and romantic honeymoon hotel right here at home? Quebec City’s Auberge Saint-Antoine gets our vote as one of Canada’s best. By Alison McGill

Luxury and privacy are two things you want in a honeymoon hideaway—you’ll get these and so much more at the swish Auberge Saint-Antoine (aubergesaintantoine.com). Located in the heart of Quebec City’s Old Port, and built on one of the area’s richest archeological sites, this hotel (named one of the “World’s Best Places to Stay” on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 2007) is absolutely brilliant—modern, luxurious, unique and completely unpretentious. One of only a handful of prestigious Relais & Châteaux properties in Canada, the hotel integrates three historical buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as a wharf and battery structure which dates back to the late 17th century. Opened in 1992, the Auberge was expanded in 1996 to include 82 rooms and 12 suites (for total indulgence book a suite with a terrace and sweeping St. Lawrence River view, from $299 and up).

Two extra-special things that make the Auberge such a standout: the artifacts displayed throughout and the in-house restaurant, Panache. More than 5,000 objects were found on the archeological site of the hotel, many of which were restored by various historical societies in the city. More than 700 are currently on display at Auberge Saint-Antoine—walking through the hotel you literally feel like you are in a museum! An important thing you’ll notice about the decor is that the only art in the hotel is the artifacts themselves (you’ll see everything from eyeglasses to toothbrushes, teacups and more). After you’ve tempted your historical taste buds, ponder all the treasures you’ve glimpsed over an incroyable meal at Panache. When we visited, our dîner clocked in at a leisurely three hours and thirty minutes, during which time we enjoyed fabulous food (all from local suppliers) created with love and the utmost creative gourmet flair. The eatery recently captured the Gold Prize in Quebec’s prestigious Grands Prix du Tourisme Québécois awards—a duly deserved accolade indeed.
