When you start making your annual new year's resolutions this year, why not consider a plan that will benefit your relationship? It’s important to keep the fire alive and making a new years resolution together as a couple can help fan the flames throughout the year. Here are a few fun resolutions you can make as a couple:
1. Schedule a date night at least once a week – and stick to it. If your budget’s tight, schedule a night in. You can cook a meal or watch a movie, but whatever you decide to do, make sure you’re doing it together (together being the key word here). Candlelit dinners are perfect for this sort of thing, but don’t get stuck in a routine. Make this your year to try new things together.
2. Plan a romantic getaway. Even if your next vacation won’t be for another year, it will give you both something to look forward to. If you simply can’t afford a vacation, plan for a weekend escape or day trip nearby and budget accordingly. Planning in advance is always practical and discussing the details will be fun for both of you.
3. Read the same book at the same time. The hardest part is picking out a book (it may take an afternoon at Chapters together). But once you find one, you’ll both enjoy having somebody else to share your thoughts and laugh at the same parts together.
4. Say “I love you” more often. It’s a simple thing that’s simply not said enough. Remember when you said it the first time? Go back to that once in a while. Try to compliment each other as much as possible. It’s always nice to be praised and compliments work like magic in relationships.
5. Surprise your spouse more often. No, we don’t mean jump out of a closet (although that would be a good laugh), but sending love letters and silly personalized gifts are nice touches that create smiles. Little surprises also have a way of sticking in your partner’s mind more than a text message ever will.
6. Try new things together. If you’re unfamiliar with how this works, we recommend watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s first. Doing new things doesn’t mean you have to go skydiving (but go for it, if you dare). It’s possible to discover new things with your feet planted on solid ground. Try a new restaurant, take a class together or take in an art exhibit – the possibilities are endless.
