Registry Rundown

First comes love then comes registry. Everything you need to know to create the wish list of your dreams. By Nicole Keen

When
Be sure to register at least six months before the big day. This will satisfy the most eager shoppers on your guest list, while providing your nearest and dearest with plenty of gift-giving options for all your pre-wedding soirees. Just remember, if you start too early there is a chance that some of the items you’ve selected will no longer be available.

How
This is not a drop-in situation. Schedule an appointment in order to receive the undivided attention of a registry expert. An experienced consultant will be able to direct you towards items you may not have considered. You and your mister should put together a carefully considered, well-rounded list that you’re both happy with, and start out with a game plan to avoid getting trigger-happy!

Where
When it comes to registry locations, more is more (within reason, of course!). Choose at least two appropriate stores, and don’t feel restricted to major department stores. Nowadays, you can register almost anywhere from art galleries to travel agencies.

What
The classics never go out of style: dishes, sheets and towels are all worth adding to your list, and this is a great opportunity to upgrade! Consider registering for heirloom-quality linens and flatware, which can be passed on to future generations. Also, add formal china to your list, so you can entertain your in-laws in style. Add items at various price points in order to accommodate all of your guests. Beyond the basics, the sky’s the limit: original artwork, camping equipment, hardware and honeymoon packages can all be yours—all you have to do is ask.

Why
Firstly, your guests will stress less when they know they can purchase something you will love and put to good use. You’ll also save yourself hassle: no faking enthusiasm for yet another toaster (“It’s just what we always wanted.”) and no running around returning unwanted gifts when you should be relaxing at home basking in newlywed bliss!
