Aside from photographs, having a video of your wedding day is one memorable way to relive your wonderful celebration all over again. Not to mention, it makes for a great wedding keepsake to re-watch on your anniversaries to come. And, if you’re worried about how it’ll turn out, don’t fret—gone are the days of cheesy wedding videos. They’ve been replaced with more modern styles, techniques and ideas, such as Super 8 mm cinematography. We caught up with photography and videography gurus, Mimmo Galati and Nazar Melconian of mimmo+naz to explain the appeal of this type of medium to brides and grooms. Here’s what they had to say:
What?
The Super 8 mm is a motion picture film from Kodak. It is not some cheesy, gaudy digital effect applied on video, it’s film. The way your mind’s eye remembers a special experience or childhood memory is exactly how Super 8 mm captures your special day. It’s a unique medium that allows us to be truthful, fun and unobtrusive—perfect for weddings or honeymoons.
Why?
Our style of shooting supports the film medium perfectly. We strive to tell simple, elegant, yet humble and fun heartfelt stories. Nothing is manufactured or invasive, as a matter of fact we know we have done our job best when our clients cry, laugh, smile and then ask how we managed to get all these moments without demanding anything from them or their party!
How?
Typically we capture 25-45 minutes of Super 8 mm film for every client. Most standard coverage starts in the morning, covering both the bride and groom getting ready, followed by the ceremony, formals and portraits, cocktails and first dance/cake cutting. We purchase our film through Kodak or a private film house in Los Angeles. After the film is exposed, it’s sent to a lab where it’s processed through chemicals, thus producing the Super 8 mm film reel. Once we have this in hand we send the film reel to a different lab where it is digitized. Once it’s digitized we begin the editing process, selecting all the highlights of your big day.
