Don’t be in the dark about lighting. When used properly, different types of light can add dimension and atmosphere to your home, and each type serves a unique purpose.
Here are four distinct light styles to help you brighten up your home:
Ambient: Also referred to as general lighting, this type contributes to the overall brightness of a room. Ambient lighting replaces sunlight, creating a base of light in the room. Ceiling, floor and table lamps all provide ambient lighting.
Accent: Accent lighting can be used to dramatic effect as a highlighter of sorts, drawing attention to certain objects or features of your home. Are you especially proud of your original artwork? Want to show off your spectacular ceiling mouldings? The right accent light can really emphasize these items, and give them the place of pride they deserve. Floodlights, track lights and sconces are all great examples of accent lighting.
Task: Task lighting is exactly that, a form of lighting that makes a specific task easier. For instance, chopping vegetables at the kitchen counter or reading a book in bed. Task lighting is another way of focusing bright light in a certain direction.
Decorative: Last but not least, decorative lighting ranges from chandeliers to candelabras. This type of lighting is all about the looks—beautiful, ornate fixtures that contribute little to overall brightness, but enormously enhance mood and atmosphere. And we all know that sometimes candlelight is the most important light of all!
