Personalized Makeup

With M.A.C. Cosmetics’ “Brunette, Blonde, Redhead” collection, you can make up for your wedding day using shades specially selected to suit you. By Alison McGill

Doing your own bridal makeup and stumped about what colours to stock your beauty palette with? The best way to determine what you need is to let your hair colour be your guide. This is exactly what the beauty gurus at M.A.C. have done with the genius new collection “Brunette, Blonde, Redhead” (at M.A.C. counters in January), three different lines of face, eye and lip colours chosen specifically to complement each hair colour.

“As a makeup artist, I am always inspired by a woman’s hair colour when I’m selecting the perfect shades for her,” says Julie St-Laurent, a senior artist with M.A.C. “With this new collection, we have created some new products, and rolled in some existing favourites, to create very specific, beautiful colour palettes. We’ve taken the guesswork out of cosmetics shopping and are offering a total beauty package that is guaranteed to look amazing.”

What works for each hair colour? Here, St-Laurent breaks it down.

Brunette
This rich hair colour can be paired with the most diverse skin tones—brunettes can be very fair or very dark. St-Laurent says because of this, brunettes have an advantage when it comes to makeup because they can play it dark and dramatic, or soft and subtle. The colours in the brunette collection reflect this, ranging from shimmering bronze gloss to rich plum lipstick and black kohl liner.
Brunette basics: “Typically they can be shy, but are also very mysterious and sexy,” shares St-Laurent, whose current favourite dark beauty is Angelina Jolie.

Blonde
This ethereal shade looks best when paired with makeup that’s equally angelic—pinks, whites and luminous purples. As most blondes are usually fair, the key is to keep makeup light and pretty—never heavy or too bright and bold. A blonde who St-Laurent says always gets it right: Gwyneth Paltrow.
Blonde basics: “We definitely do like to have fun!” laughs St-Laurent who’s a member of the blonde brigade. “Blondes typically have a sunny personality and like to switch things up according to their mood.”

Redhead
Such a dramatic hair colour (think Julianne Moore) warrants equally dramatic makeup, but the key is to keep it bold, not garish. Rich corals, deep pinks and orange reds for the lips bring out the fire in this hair colour, while rich bronzes paired with shimmering rose golds look amazing on the eyes, which are typically blue or green in colour. The star product of M.A.C.’s redhead collection: Red Devil Lipglass, a juicy mandarin shade.
Redhead basics: “This is definitely not a shy woman,” St-Laurent reports. “She loves attention and the attention her fiery hair colour brings her.”

I am disappointed that you've left out people with black hair in this article.
