The Perfect Professional

We’ve thought up five helpful tips to ensure that you choose the right makeup artist to make you look flawless on your big day. By Tanya Pressé

While some brides opt to do their own makeup on their wedding day, many want a professional to help beautify them. In order to guarantee that you find “the one” and ask all the right questions, look over these tips and tricks.

1. Reputation This is the most important thing to consider when searching for a makeup artist. You need someone that you can depend on because, let’s face it, they’ll be responsible for how your face looks on one of the most important days of your life (and that means in photos that will be seen for years to come, too)! Ideally, choose someone who is recommended by a trusted friend, but if that's not possible, ask your prospective makeup artist to show you a portfolio of his or her work. That way, you’ll get inspiration for your own look, plus you’ll see how your makeup will photograph, which is something important to consider. To further verify their credibility, ask if they’re certified. You want a person that will definitely be there on your day, so meet with them ahead of time (you should do this for trial runs!) to get a sense of their dedication.

2. Location, Location, Location You may want to get that international award-winning makeup artist, but is this a good idea if their salon is two hours away? What if you get stuck in traffic or your car breaks down? What if you leave something at the salon that is crucial to the wedding? Our advice is, stay close to home. Know your route and alternative means of getting there and back. Keep in mind that many makeup artists offer to travel to you. They’ll come to your place, bring along their beauty bag and beautify the whole wedding party.

3. All Hands on Deck If your makeup artist has to doll up the whole bridal party, which consists of eight bridesmaids, your mom and your mother-in-law, she’ll likely be there a while and the last thing you need is any delay. So, before the big day, check and see if she has any assistants available to speed up the process. But, like with your chief makeup artist, ensure that you can trust them by looking into their reputations. And don’t forget, while your bridal party is important and you owe them for putting up with your sometimes-Bridezilla ways, remember it is your day, so the makeup artist can and should be focusing on you!

4. Find a Friend It's best to find a makeup artist you're able to click with. You want someone who is easy to work with and who seems generally concerned about making you look like a goddess on your day. You won’t need any extra stress on your nuptials, so a drama-filled diva is not someone you want to hire! He or she should seem loyal and dedicated to your style and requests, but should also be someone who isn’t afraid to tell you that that too much colour makes you look like you belong in the ’80s.

5. Brands Don't be afraid to ask your makeup artist about the products they use. You want a long-lasting makeup that will stand up to the weather (be that the summer heat or the winter chill) and you want all of your emotional reactions covered, like waterproof mascara for those tears of happiness! Plus, you’ll want products that won’t cause a massive skin reaction, so quality items and pre-wedding-day trials are a necessity. Another thing to consider is if your makeup artist boasts the newest technologies, like airbrushing techniques that give you that flawless finish!
