Budget-Friendly Art

Make original artwork part of your home with these three budget-friendly solutions. By Nicole Keen

When you’re first starting out as a newly married couple, an original piece of art probably isn’t in the picture (or in the budget, for that matter), but that doesn’t mean you should spend the next several years staring at blank walls. Indeed, there are plenty of easy and affordable ways to decorate every room of the house—all it takes is a little creative thinking. Here are three simple ways to get the art you crave at a price point that works for you:

1. Pick up a Brush
You’ve always been a skeptic when it comes to modern art, insisting that anyone could paint those horizontal stripes on a canvas—now’s your chance to prove it. Start small, and try geometric shapes, colour blocking or paint splatters. For all you computer whizzes out there, experiment with photo shop to create your very own Warhol-inspired masterpiece, the ultimate homage to your brand-new mister.

2. Be a Copy Cat
Just because you can’t afford the original, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night” hanging in your bedroom. A museum-quality reproduction, tastefully framed, can make a lovely addition to any home. Also, consider collecting original prints. While not absolutely one-of-a-kind, a print is one of a limited number produced; thus, it is still somewhat exclusive.

3. Draft a Wish List
More and more independent galleries are offering wedding registry services. This is definitely an option worth exploring if you are in the market for a wedding gift that will truly last a lifetime. Original paintings are available in a range of prices. For instance, the Edward Day Gallery in Toronto offers registry services for pieces priced between $50 and $45,000. Many galleries, such as Swirl Fine Art and Design in Calgary, will also provide registry cards or display your chosen piece on their website, making the entire registry process completely stress-free for you and your friends and family.
