Last week I received a press release suggesting that hair crimping (remember that?) was back in style. I have to say, I was taken aback—there are some trends you just don’t expect to see again. Ever. Flipping through old issues of Weddingbells I definitely noticed several fashion and beauty looks that beg to be left the dust. On the other hand, there are also certain elements that reappear throughout the decades—from 1985 until now—and continue to look just as good today as they did five, 10 or 25 years ago. Here are five of our favourite trends that are guaranteed to stand the test of time:
1) Lace. As far as fabrics go, this one’s a bridal classic. Keep things modern by choosing a dress with a sleek, fitted silhouette. Nowadays, lace is available in all different shapes, sizes and colours—some of the most gorgeous gowns this season feature cream lace on a background of pale gold, blue, pink or green.
2) Red Lips. This look isn’t for everyone, but if your heart’s set on glam wedding-day makeup, there’s nothing better than a pair of ruby lips. Just remember to keep the rest of your face neutral, and pick a kiss-proof formula so your lips will last all-day long.
3) Chignons. The updo is a bridal hairstyle that just keeps going and going. What’s new? Today’s version is loose and perfectly imperfect (as opposed to the helmet hairdos of yesteryear).
4) Ballgowns. Chelsea Clinton’s recent nuptials proved the ballgown is back big time (not that it ever really went away!). If you want to be princess for a day, this is the dream dress for you.
5) Veils. Quirky headbands and feathered fascinators are increasingly popular, but there’s only one quintessential bridal accessory: the veil. This timeless tradition just might be the finishing touch you’re looking for.
