10 Makeup Secrets

Professional makeup artist Sonia Kashuk shares 10 secrets for achieving the perfect wedding-day look. By Sara Duck

The wedding day is a true endurance test for your makeup. Your lipstick, eyeshadow and powder have to survive millions of stares, thousands of photos, hundreds of smiles, dozens of tears and one all-important kiss. Sonia Kashuk, creator of the Sonia Kashuk Professional Makeup brand (she's worked with models like Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington, plus she produces her own line of cosmetics for the U.S. chain Target), offers these helpful tips for brides planning to attempt their own wedding-day makeup.

1. Have a fresh start. On the morning of, begin prepping your skin by using a gentle exfoliating cleanser. Do this to ensure you’re applying makeup to clean, smooth skin.

2. Be a softie. Moisturize so your complexion feels comfortable and looks even. This will give you the perfect canvas to work with.

3. Build your marriage on a firm foundation. Create picture-perfect skin by applying foundation wherever needed, keeping in mind that a little goes a long way.

4. Get set. Set your foundation by giving your face a light dusting of sheer loose powder with a powder brush.

5. Be a blushing bride. Give your face a natural glow by using a soft pink blush. If you prefer powder, use a blusher brush and apply using circular motions on the apples of the cheeks.

6. Say eye love you. The key to sexy, yet classic eyes is enhancing your eyelashes with a demi-lash. Choose a natural-looking one for extra drama. A beautiful groomed brow serves as the final frame for the eyes. Use a brow pencil to lightly fill in any sparse areas. Finish by gently brushing the brows with a brow comb.

7. Keep it in the family. Using two or three shades of warm brown or cool taupe eyeshadows takes the guesswork out of what goes with what and always looks sophisticated.

8. Seal it with a kiss. For long wear, prep your lips by applying a thin layer of foundation over the lip line. Next, use a lipliner that co-ordinates with your lip colour to fill in the lips, making sure the shape is not overly defined. Use sheer loose powder to set this in place. Finally, apply gloss or lip colour beginning in the centre of the lips, working your way out to the edges while keeping colour away from the lip line.

9. Make it last forever. Remember, loose powder is your friend. To make your makeup last, use it as a layering tool between your various makeup steps.

10. Have a picture-perfect day. The key to great pictures is to keep your makeup evenly balanced so that one feature doesn’t stand out. Most importantly, remember to smile and enjoy yourself!
