Bridesmaid Style

Five tips for choosing stylish, wearable dresses for your bridesmaids. By Nicole Keen

Bridesmaids’ dresses definitely have a bad rep, and a trip to your local thrift store will show you exactly why: racks and racks of discarded poufy taffeta nightmares! For too long, bridesmaids have been expected to shell out hundreds of dollars for a dress that they will never ever wear again (except maybe as a Halloween costume!). Luckily, those days are a thing of the past. Most brides today (yourself included), want their bridesmaids to look and feel good. Hence, our top five tips for choosing a classy, timeless bridesmaid’s dress that they just might wear again.

1. Keep it simple. Puffy sleeves, ballgown skirts and oversized bows are passé to say the least. Instead, opt for clean, modern silhouettes with minimal embellishment that are flattering to a variety of body types–like a chic A-line dress with a simple ribbon sash (that can easily be removed or changed for more versatility). Also, two-piece outfits (a top and skirt) can be extremely practical as they can be separated and worn again with other items of clothing. A silk shantung top, separated from its matching skirt, can be paired with black pants or jeans long after the main event.

2. Consider black. There’s a reason that the LBD (little black dress) is so iconic: it’s endlessly chic and versatile. Coco Chanel certainly knew what she was talking about. Every woman (bridesmaid or not!) should have an LBD in her wardrobe. If you are having a cocktail reception, black bridesmaids’ dresses will definitely hit the mark, and your girls will thank you!

3. Choose various lengths. Don’t assume that all your bridesmaids have to wear floor-sweeping gowns. This length can appear far too formal depending on the kind of ceremony and reception you are planning. A great cocktail-length dress (like the bright yellow stunner pictured here) can definitely do the job, and chances are your girls will find another chance to wear it: out for drinks on a Saturday night with some sexy stilettos, or attending Sunday brunch with a great pair of bejewelled flats. Also, don’t be afraid to put some of your girls in floor-length gowns and others in shorter outfits. Just keep the fabric and colour palette consistent.

4. Opt for different necklines. As mentioned above, be sure to maintain a common element with all your bridesmaids’ dresses, but feel free to give your girls some options. Some ladies feel fabulous in strapless, while others prefer a little more coverage–a cap-sleeve for instance. Try to accommodate these preferences, and allow your bridesmaids to choose a dress that makes them feel comfortable and confident. A truly great bridesmaid dress will flatter all different body types. If your bridesmaids feel good in their dresses, they are more likely to don them again for a different occasion.

5. Go with metallic accessories.  Now that you’ve settled on a gorgeous dress, don’t bring things down with ho-hum accessories. Stay away from matchy-matchy shoes and bags—they don’t have to be the exact shade of the dress! Choose sleek, sophisticated metallics instead. Fashionable strappy sandals and peep-toe pumps or ballet flats look great in gold, silver or bronze; and these shades are neutral—they go with any colour dress. Also, a clutch is a must-have accessory, and makes a great bridesmaid gift.
