Let the stressful months of wedding planning melt away by curling up in the comfort of a luxurious linen set. Though quality sheets might seem like a costly indulgence at first, you’ll soon realize that nothing can compare with the sweet dreams sumptuous linens can bring. And remember, high quality fibre gives you luxury that lasts longer.
Selecting the perfect sheet set can be challenging. Here’s some information to make sheet shopping a bit easier for you:
Location, Location, Location!
Who knew the country your cotton comes from would be so important in determining the quality of your linens? If you think only thread count counts, think again. Even though thread count is important to the feel and longevity of your sheets, it’s actually origin and milling process that matters most. A sheet’s softness depends on its grade of fibre, so a 220 thread-count sheet set can feel softer than a 500 thread-count made from an inferior fabric.
At Au Lit Fine Linens (aulitfinelinens.com), a luxury linen store in Toronto, it’s the quality of the cotton and how and where it’s woven that makes a difference. Au Lit boasts of some of the finest linens in the country, carrying only Egyptian cotton woven in Italy and sewn in Montreal. This fabric sets the bar as the world’s best cotton, and the renowned Italian weave increases the quality, so keep your eyes peeled when searching for the perfect sheet.
Always check the label to ensure you’re buying 100% Egyptian cotton, as many manufacturers claim their cotton comes straight from the Nile when, in fact, it actually contains as little as 1% of the fibre.
Cotton Satin Versus Percale
Buying linen is as personal as picking out your pyjamas, so it’s important to feel the fabric and decide what’s best for you. Cotton satin sheets have a silky sheen, and are technically softer than their percale counterparts. Though the feel may be finer, casual percale has the crisp linen feel many people love. Don’t be afraid to test the waters by touching and feeling different products to find the right fit. Popular colours include chocolate brown, blue and taupe, while classic faves such as ivory and white will work in any bedroom.
The Thread Count Theory
Though the thread count theory has been debunked, it’s still an important aspect to consider. Decent quality sheets begin at 180, and the actual “count” is the number of threads per square inch. The most popular counts are 410 and 220, but it’s best to pick the one that feels right for you.

My partner and I went to Luxe Linen to discuss sheet options. Both workers were extremely rude to us and on top of their negative body language towards us, they lied to us about the quality of the sheets. I would not recommend them for their poor customer services, but most of all, I would advice you not to purchase products from there because they lied to try and make a sale.
