Luscious Locks

Super stylist Kevin Murphy dishes on beautiful bridal hair. By Nicole Keen

Australian hairdresser extraordinaire Kevin Murphy has been an editorial and session stylist for more than two decades, and his trend-setting looks have appeared on the covers of major magazines worldwide. Needless to say, we jumped at the opportunity to sit down and chat about his latest products (yes, he also has an eponymous hair-care line!) and get his expert opinion on haute bridal hair.

Weddingbells: What are some of the hottest hair trends at the moment?
Kevin Murphy: “Plaits (braids) are everywhere this season. Semi-traditional updos are popular, as are loose, casual waves.”

WB: Are there any looks you’re tired of seeing on brides?
KM: “Stiff barrel curls are out. I would also recommend that brides avoid tendrils—you don’t want loose pieces on the side of your head!”

WB: Hair accessories are extremely popular with brides, but they have to work with their hairstyles. What type of ’do would look good with a long veil, for instance?
KM: I would put the hair down with a side part and Hollywood-style waves, not curls.”

Weddingbells note: When in doubt, Murphy’s Screen Siren Kit (available April 1st at select salons) is a foolproof way to achieve this look on your own for your wedding day or honeymoon. You can even find instructional videos online at kevinmurphy.com.au.

WB: What type of hairstyle would complement a tiara?
KM: “If you’re going to wear a tiara, make sure it’s good quality, and that you look like a sophisticated woman. A great alternative to a tiara is having jewels sewn into your hair. Beyoncé has been known to work this look on the red carpet.”

WB: What if a bride is wearing a retro-inspired birdcage veil?
KM: “With this type of veil, the hair can look good up or down. I would probably opt for something with a bit of height like a French roll that’s teased at the top.”

WB: Pre-wedding, what should brides be doing to prep their tresses for the big day?
KM: Get a trim the month before the wedding. Have your colour done two weeks prior. Don’t have any treatments within 48 hours of the wedding, and don’t have any oil treatments within 24 hours.

Weddingbells note: In the weeks leading up to your wedding, nourish your hair with Murphy’s newest shampoo and conditioner, Hydrate Me Wash and Hydrate Me Rinse. Packed with lots of all-natural ingredients, including super-moisturizing Kakadu Plum, these products are sure to whip your locks into shape!

WB: Last but not least, how can a Canadian bride achieve Australian beach-babe hair?
KM: For beachy hair, less is more. Teasing won’t help. It’s all about horizontal sections of hair (a.k.a. no vertical spirals). Don’t use serums, as they will only weigh down your tresses.
