Love on Location

How do you choose the right place to wed when the whole world is at your fingertips? By Jami Moran

You’ve always been a little adventurous, and you’ve always known that when the time came you would have a destination wedding. But now that the time has come, how on earth – literally – do you choose a location? The possibilities are endless: will it be near or far, big or small, plane or train, all-inclusive or à la carte? Here are three things you can do to help narrow down the selection process.

1. What are your must-haves in a location? Is it important for you to be married in a chapel, or will the beach suffice? Are great food and wine an absolute must for you when you travel? Are you looking for a tropical escape or a European getaway? Make a list of what’s non-negotiable in a great destination, and what you’re willing to bend on.

2. Do your research. Once you’ve decided what’s important for you in a destination, you can start researching locations that offer these things. Buy guides to the countries or areas you’re considering. Talk to people who’ve been there, and find out what they thought of their visit. First-hand accounts are a great way to get the inside scoop on different cities and hotels. One of the best resources for destination brides can be found right here in Weddingbells.ca’s online community. With one click, you can find hundreds of brides like yourself who are willing to share and exchange information on different locations abroad.

3. Talk to a professional. Don’t under-estimate the power of a travel agent. A good one can help you speed up the process, as well as narrow down your selection even further by giving you price quotes, letting you in on travel secrets, knowing the best times to go, and even offering group rates or wedding discounts. They can also fill you in on marriage and residency requirements for different countries, legal costs, and any additional requirements – such as blood-work, translations, or long-form birth certificates – you may need to get married in a particular country.

My husband and I got married on the beautiful island of Barbados in 2005. It was a dream, and the best decision we ever made! Do your homework. Make sure that which ever place you choose that the wedding certificate is delivered to you before you leave and that it is stamp by the certified people.

Barbados they did it all. There was a flat fee for licensing, flowers, etc, anything extra we paid, but we kept it simple and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Do research, ask questions, and it won't hurt to take a trip down 4,5,6 months prior to the wedding and make sure there is NO construction work happening as well, and remember
HAVE FUN !
