Lela’s World

Get the lowdown on Lela Rose, the latest bridal designer to take the world by storm. By Nicole Keen

Bridal designer extraordinaire Vera Wang is a household name recognized not only for her exquisite wedding gowns but for her various ventures, among them: stationery, tableware and perfume. But who’s the newest multi-talented designer on the scene? If you haven’t heard her name before now, it’s about time you get familiar with Lela Rose.
With a successful ready-to-wear line, wedding collection, collaboration with Payless Shoes and brand-new bridesmaid line in partnership with Dessy, there’s little that she can’t do. Her super-stylish bridesmaid or party dress collection is the latest in a long line of fashionable achievements, and if you aspire to a sophisticated, handcrafted aesthetic, you should definitely find a way to incorporate some Lela Rose into your big day!

On the Catwalk
Unlike fellow designer Vera Wang, Lela Rose actually got her start in ready to wear, establishing a signature collection in 1998. Rose quickly developed a following devoted to her particular brand of girly dresses and separates. Indeed, so many women turned to Rose for special occasion dresses that the progression to bridal design was only natural.

The White Way
In 2006 Rose adapted signature details and fabrics from her ready-to-wear line and a coveted wedding collection was born. Combining a couture sensibility with high-quality materials such as silk faille and organic cotton, the line is perfect if you’re searching for a flawlessly crafted creation that really expresses who you are. As a matter of fact, Rose observes that her typical bride tends to be a little bit older and more sophisticated. “She is looking for a gown with a fashion edge that tells the story of who she is and where she came from,” says Rose.

Well Heeled
For those of you on a strict budget, it might be worth checking out Rose’s line of affordable and stylish shoes for Payless. Find everything from dainty flats to peep-toe pumps inspired by her ready-to-wear collection. And if you’re planning a trip across the border any time soon, you should definitely keep your eyes peeled for her new special occasions collection, “Unforgettable Moments.” Seven or eight dyeable styles are available in 64 different colours! The collection is currently only sold stateside, but we’re hoping it will come to Canada in the near future.

Maid in Heaven
And last but not least, Rose has recently added bridesmaids’ dresses to her sartorial repertoire. Atypical fabrics and colours, such as “platinum,” “mocha” and “sailor” (marine blue) plus signature details, like rosettes, make the line stand out. There are 12 styles available, and Rose recommends choosing a different option for each girl depending upon which style is most flattering to her body type. These party dresses are so sophisticated and fashion-forward that they can definitely be worn again long after the big day.
