Lash of Genius

A guide to getting fabulous fake lashes for your big day! By Brittany Curran

Have your guests doing a double take at your fantastic wedding-day falsies! Forgo an over-the-top look but don’t shy away from adding a little oomph to your eyes using artificial lashes. Follow these five tips to find the perfect pair without the scare.

Strip Search
When it comes to length, bigger isn’t better. While you definitely want your fake lashes to stand out, extreme or disproportionate sets can overpower your overall look. With strips–either in full sets or two to five pieces–seek out a pair that’s not overly thick, long or impractical so you can still add mascara without looking too harsh. You want falsies to enhance—not overwhelm—your eyes, so opt to play up a thinner set.
One at a Time
Individual lashes may seem like a tiring and tedious process, but the effect is worth the effort. Singles add a modest fullness to the eyes, essentially filling in the gaps of your existing pair of batting beauties.  Although time-consuming, they tend to look more natural than sets or strips. However, your eyes do not require more than a few, so avoid overfilling.

Hint of Tint
If you like the look of dyed falsies–whether it’s with a subtle shade or a brighter hue–keep your peepers chic and playful with flattering tones. For a neutral yet tinted look, stay within the colour family of your eyes and natural lashes. If you crave a more whimsical tone, choose a tint that complements, not contrasts, your matrimonial makeup.
Testing, Testing, Testing
The application process is delicate, so you may want to enlist a professional’s help. Just like your hairdo, test runs for falsies are crucial. To ensure you’ll get the desired look done right, book an appointment with your esthetician prior to your wedding day for a run-through.

Apply Yourself
Putting on fake lashes can be simple, but make sure you follow the proper steps for a flawless application. First apply a stroke of eyeliner and subtly smudge it into your lashline. Pull the fake lash through eyelash glue to slightly cover the ends and wait 10 seconds for it to set. Use a thin, narrow pair of tweezers to place the falsies as close to your lashline as possible and gently push down for the adhesive to stick. Tackle the centre of your eyelashes first, followed by the corners, and finally, fill in the rest with discretion. Voilà—gorgeous, full lashes in a flash!
