Keep Your Guests Cool

Planning a hot summer wedding? Here are six ways to keep your guests refreshed. By Roseanne Dela Rosa and Alyssa Buckley.

It’s no secret that the hot summer months of July and August are unofficially considered The Wedding Season. Once that summer weather shines down, every entertainment venue from gardens to beaches to tents is booked solid. And, with heat waves rolling through, it’s easy to see how many of your guests may get agitated and restless, especially when the sun is pouring down on them for hours on end. To help your guests keep their cool, here are a few fresh ideas.

Fan Fare
Stock a pretty basket with paper fans and have them available for guests as they enter your ceremony. Better yet, kill two birds with one stone and consider doubling them up as a ceremony program or personalizing them and giving them away as favours.

Refreshing Refreshments
There’s nothing better than downing an ice-cold drink on a hot and sunny day. Ensure that your reception is filled with thirst-quenching cocktails like lemonade and ice tea. The most important drink? Water. Get creative and have your water bottles personalized, or for serving ease, surround your reception area with water jug stations.

Under the Umbrella
If you’re hosting an outdoor ceremony (and especially if it has very little shade), consider handing out colourful paper parasols or umbrellas for your guests to use. Like the fans, the parasols can also serve double duty – you can personalize them and use them as your bonbonnières.

Rent-a-Tent
Tents are a great way to create some much-needed shade for your guests, especially if you’re hosting your wedding in a large, open outdoor area.  A tent will also act as a contingency plan should it (heaven forbid) rain on your special day. With all different shapes and sizes to choose from, you're bound to find one to suit your venue and taste.

Freezie Please
Why not hand out freezies or popsicles to your guests to enjoy during your ceremony? Not only do they taste delicious and keep you cool, but they also come in an array of bright summer colours to perfectly accent your theme. Better yet, have a snow cone machine standing by, complete with your own customized cone cups!

Wind Power
Just because you’re having your wedding outdoors doesn’t mean you have to throw all luxury out the window. If you know it’s going to be a hot day, borrow or rent a few electrical fans and place them strategically around your venue. They may not be as pretty as your flowers but your guests will be too comfortable to complain!
