Jewel of the Caribbean

Enjoy an intimate honeymoon at Half Moon, Jamaica’s most romantic resort. By Roseanne Dela Rosa

Now celebrating its 53rd year in business, Half Moon (halfmoon.com) in Montego Bay, Jamaica has played host to generations of families. The list of repeat visits and regular guests is long with many guests booking a return visit every year, and in many cases, it all starts with a honeymoon! So, what makes Half Moon so special? Its sublime beauty and amazing service. There are 17 cottages and 30 beachfront rooms, which are the original spaces, plus 398 new luxury rooms, situated on 162 hectares bordered by a private, two-mile white-sand beach. If that hasn’t sold you, here are three more reasons to escape to this luxe location, post “I dos.”

1. Beach Life
With a two-mile white-sand beach at your disposal, it’s easy to find a secluded space to swim and lounge around. If you’re both feeling a need for adventure, you may want to opt for their private water activities, such as scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing and even a horse ride on the beach. Just a precaution, their horse rides are not for the faint of heart. Be prepared to ride into the ocean with your horse—a truly exhilarating experience and a definite must-try.

2. Spa Life
If you love to Zen out, Half Moon has one of the best spas in the world. Local flavours prevail at the resort’s spectacular Fern Tree Spa, which was recently given props as one of the world’s best in Condé Nast Traveler. Measuring in at a colossal 6,300 square metres, the spa is an indoor/outdoor facility offering every indulgence imaginable. Kick up the heat factor with your mister at the spa by booking a sexy couple’s massage, or have the spa experts customize a package for just the two of you to be enjoyed in the comfort of your own suite.

3. Good Eats
The cuisine at Half Moon is divine. Of particular note is The Sugar Mill, which is located just a five-minute shuttle ride from the resort’s main lobby and offers the ultimate in romantic dining experiences. The menu includes gourmet dishes, such as fresh seafood, and local delicacies (think authentic jerk chicken and plantains). End your gastronomic experience on a sweet note with their popular home-made rum and raisin ice cream. If you want a more intimate dinner, connect with the romance concierge department upon arrival, and inquire about a private dinner pour deux in Half Moon’s gorgeous gazebo.
