Italy’s Best

For the ultimate stay, there are only two hotels to consider for your Italian sojourn: Villa D’Este and Villa la Massa. By Alison McGill

Dreaming of a European honeymoon where you’ll be immersed in spectacular scenery and treated to unparalleled dining and pampering? Then one (or both) of these luxurious Italian destinations is for you. Owned by the same group, the properties offer travel packages, which allow you to enjoy stays at both!

Villa D’Este (villadeste.it). Located on gorgeous Lake Como (where George Clooney has a home), this is one of Europe’s most legendary resorts. Originally built in 1568 as a summer home for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, the building became a hotel in 1873. This playground for the world’s elite is one of The Leading Hotels of the World and features 152 guest rooms, each different from the next, outfitted with elegant and opulent antique furnishings and fixtures. The hotel grounds are quite simply spectacular, and you could spend days exploring and learning the history of Villa D’Este. The hotel closes for the winter season in October, but reopens in May.

Villa la Massa (villalamassa.it). Purchased by the Villa D’Este group in 1999, this charming hotel is located close to Florence and was the place Iman and David Bowie chose for their destination “I dos.” With just 37 rooms, the Villa la Massa is intimate and cozy, housed in a Medici Villa built in the 16th century. The backdrop here is spectacular, with each guest room offering a view of the property’s lush gardens or of the romantic river Arno; the decor is Renaissance-style, featuring old-world touches from the Medici period such as four-poster beds and terra cotta tiles. The food here, of course, is to die for (as it is at Villa D’Este). The menu bursts with Italian specialties prepared in the Tuscan culinary tradition.
