Intimate Portrait

A brief rundown on proper wedding lingerie. By Brittany Curran

There’s nothing worse than an ill-fitting bra or too-tight undergarments! Every wedding dress requires specific lingerie and we believe these unmentionables are worth mentioning. Check out our list of gown shapes and styles to see which lingerie will work best for you on the big day.

From the Top

Strapless
Many strapless bras have a deep plunge so the bra is essentially invisible when wearing either a sweetheart or V-shaped neckline. Depending on your bust size, you should purchase a bra with the right cup size, a comfortable underwire or band, and in a neutral shade similar to your skin tone.

Thick Straps
Whether you require more support or you just prefer the look of a thick strap, this dress style can accommodate more options. For larger breasts, a minimizer bra provides full coverage and many decrease the look of your bust size by one to two inches; minimizers now come in everything from strapless to seamless. A shapely camisole is another alternative by giving you protection from the shoulders to your waist and by helping to smooth out the stomach.

Thin Straps
Demi-cut bras cover just half the breast and usually have slender straps, which can work for most dress shapes. Some come in wide-set styles to decrease the chance of anyone catching a glimpse! You could certainly enhance your décolletage with a push-up bra, since thin-strapped dresses are more delicate on top because they don’t need to hold up a heavy amount of material. A bustier or corset would also provide fitted protection around your bust and rib cage.

Halter
Convertible straps that make a halter shape are much easier to accommodate, being both flexible and adjustable. Some bras are also styled in a halter-neck shape, which naturally curves from your bust to your neck, with simple clasps to avoid a bulge where your dress ties. A bandeau bra also works to prevent any straps from showing.

Bottom Line

Straight
Straight cuts tend to follow the natural shape of your body. Opt for “barely there” underwear, like a G-string or cheekies, which offer light, full-coverage around your waist and a thong-like bottom. A seamless style also eliminates panty lines, making you even more picture perfect! Also, consider Spanx with its line of full body shapers and tummy cinchers that help slim and smooth out any problem areas.

Mermaid
This sleek and sexy shape is form fitting and flattering. Like with a straight style dress, you would benefit from high-waisted, seamless panties that flatten your stomach without showing lines. Control-top pantyhose are great to wear over your undergarment, as they are extra-supportive hosiery tackling your calves, thighs, stomach and waist. A thigh-length slip works for a mermaid dress, too. It usually includes a built-in bra and support for your stomach and bottom.

Empire
An empire dress starts to flow away at the waistline, giving you some flexibility regarding your undergarments. Hipster, brief and bikini cuts take top choice, as they offer full coverage and a comfortable style without feeling bulky. Boy-shorts are also a great alternative to extremely lady-like briefs, as they give you a square-shaped cut that covers everything effectively.

A-line
Both A-line and ballgown styles allow you to wear pretty much whatever you’d like! Since both shapes float away from the body, there’s no fear that your bottom undergarments will show—choose what feels best! Briefs are a classic choice that provide enough coverage, while bikini cuts are a bit skimpier but equally comfortable. A thong might not be the best option as it may feel like too little under a full-bodied skirt. You also don’t want the underwear to ride or roll up, so make sure they have a higher rise and sit just above your hip.

While the dress is oh-so-important, what’s underneath is just as essential. Remember to consider these costs in your budget and get a professional fitting to know your measurements. There’s no need to shy away from lace, colour or other details—just make sure they fit correctly on your body and under your gown. You should always feel confident and sexy underneath your clothing without sacrificing comfort, fit or style—especially on your wedding day!
