1. Colour Your World
It's true what they say can happen with a little paint—that is, a lot! Wallpaper is also great as it comes in many chic patterns, sure to freshen up any dull room. Which is better? Paint is usually less expensive and easier to apply than wallpaper. If you're not working with a flat surface, then go for wallpaper. Either way, you can totally update a room just by colouring the walls.
2. Rearrange
There's something refreshing about rearranging a room, especially if you've been living in the same place for a while. Obviously certain rooms have limitations due to windows, doors or built-in features like fireplaces, but simple changes like shifting a standing lamp or moving a piece of art to another wall can make an old room feel new again—and at zero cost!
3. Swap Shades
Changing a lampshade can do more than you think to update a room. If you currently have a white shade, consider a coloured one. Not into colour? Change the shape! This is much cheaper than buying a whole new light fixture, since the base is the most expensive part. The great thing about this switch is if you get sick of it, it's easy to change back!
4. New Pillows & Throws
These accessories are simple, budget-friendly and seasonally appropriate. If you don't already, consider swapping your pillows and throws as the weather changes. Winter weather calls for more lush fabrics, like wool and fur, and darker, more intense colours. Once the summer rolls around consider choosing lighter fabrics and colours. This is an easy way to update your home year-round without going broke.
5. Freshen Up Furniture
Furniture is a big investment and if you're in your first home, you may not be ready to splurge on all new pieces. If that's the case, consider getting a slipcover or having an old piece professionally covered. Option two is better if the body of the piece is still in good condition, and you know you want to keep it forever. Buy a slipcover if you're looking for more of an aesthetic update.
6. Flea Market Finds
If you're a bargain hunter, flea markets and vintage shops are great spots to find unique pieces that can be used as is or revamped with just a little TLC. For example, a great dresser can be gorgeous again, with just a coat of paint, while a lamp base may just need a new shade. Don't buy items that aren't in working condition or that you don't love. If you don't end up using it, it's not much of a deal.
7. Up & Down
Like swapping your pillows and throws, changing your curtains and carpets can make a big impact in a room. This is a great option if you aren't able to (or aren't interested in) painting. Finding a piece with texture or colour is what will make the greatest impact, especially if the rest of your decor is on the neutral side.
