Ikea’s known for its modern designs, so no wonder they’ve kept things current with a “go green” mentality! The company has created a new program, “The Never Ending List,” which includes nearly 100 ideas, practices and goals to maintain a healthy relationship between labour and the earth. As a business bigwig, Ikea uses its influence to be environmentally forward. Here are eight ways they are working towards the future:
- In the past two years, Ikea successfully recycled, reclaimed or reused up to 90 percent of its total waste.
- Many locations designate preferred parking spots to hybrid or fuel-efficient cars; offer home delivery service for those travelling by public transportation; and have free shuttles between nearby urban districts and the store.
- For 13 years, Ikea has continually helped reduce Canada’s CO2 levels.
- Since October 2007, Ikea stores have charged five cents per bag. The profits accumulated during those two years totalled over $280,000 and were donated to Tree Canada. Last summer, they went one step further and ceased selling plastic bags altogether.
- In 2009, Ikea paired up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and helped provide room makeovers to kids suffering from life-threatening conditions.
- For nine years, forestry scholarships were provided annually to students from Russia, Poland, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania to study at the Swedish University of Agricultural Science.
- To minimize health problems, Ikea works towards balancing the amount of formaldehyde emissions and natural wood levels in their products.
- In 2000, Ikea introduced Iway, a system that maintains safety and respect between the company and its suppliers. These standards include: no child or forced labour; healthy working conditions; abiding by all local laws; and careful handling of chemicals.
Ikea’s ongoing list is just another way we can all make environmentally smart decisions to keep our planet thriving and vibrant.
