Having your wedding at home can be a great way to celebrate on a budget, but also a fabulous way to infuse your wedding with personal style. Remember the gorgeous home wedding thrown on Father of the Bride? Here are a few things you need to keep in mind when planning your big day chez vous.
Talk to Your Officiant
If you’re planning on having a religious officiant conduct your ceremony, find out beforehand if the wedding service you want can be performed at home. Some officiants can’t or won’t perform wedding services outside of a place of worship.
Have a Heart-to-Heart with the Host
Things such as the start and end time, number of guests and professional cleanup (before and after the event) need to be discussed. If you miss this crucial step, you may find yourself facing a lot of headaches, perhaps even heartache. Also, inform the host that you will pay for any damages that you incur.
Notify Neighbours
Once your plans are in the works, notify the neighbours. Let them know the date of the wedding and the hours of the event. If necessary, discuss parking options for guests. It would also be a nice gesture to follow-up after the big day with a thank-you card and gift.
Choosing Your Wedding Attire
If your wedding is taking place in a house of modest size, it may not be practical to wear a Cinderella-type gown. Also, think about your shoes. If the ceremony and reception are taking place on grass, then you may want to wear flats or low pumps.
De-Clutter the House
Wherever possible, try to make the space clutter-free. For example, your caterer will need every inch of the kitchen countertop. Make sure the bathroom countertops are also clear and ensure that extra rolls of toilet paper, pretty hand towels and soaps are available for use.
A Family Affair
There is nothing that says, “We are family,” like a wedding at home—so make it a family affair. Delegate various aspects of the big day to family members. Don’t take on so much work that it spoils your enjoyment.
Trial Run
The best way to find out what is needed and where it’s needed is to literally walk through the wedding in a trial run. From where your guests will enter and hang up their jackets to where they will go to get drinks—a trial is a must in order to avoid any glitches.
