Moving into a brand new home with builder white walls can be exhilarating and exciting. Together, you and your mister can transform this blank canvas into your very own masterpiece. To help you navigate through colour palettes, furniture selection and accessories, Weddingbells dished with home designer Amy Butler. A contributing editor to Country Living magazine, Butler offers these five tips for decorating your new pad.
1. Establish a colour scheme that you both love, and decide which rooms will be painted or papered. To create your palette, pull together swatches of your favourite fabrics. Once you begin to get the room together, these swatches will act as accents.
Tip: Another great way to establish your colour story is to gather together meaningful objects and accessories, and then let their colours inspire your combinations.
2. If you’re newly nesting, chances are you’re on a budget. But this doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. There are plenty of ways to create a warm living space without breaking the bank. For instant texture, incorporate pillows, floor cushions or fancy throws into your space.
Tip: Floor cushions are both stylish and cost effective. They’re also an affordable substitute for extra seating.
3. Don’t be afraid to visit local flea markets, antique stores and yard sales for unique furniture, dishes, accessories and artifacts. You may find one-of-a-kind pieces that will add different tones of character and warmth to your space. Spot an antique chair with flair? Refurbish it with fresh paint or a simple slipcover.
Bonus: It’s environmentally beneficial to re-purpose items (less stuff in the landfills)—a total win-win!
4. A spot of paint can fix anything. Adding a splash of colour to your white walls will make a huge impact and, if you have a change of heart, it’s easy to have a change of colour, too.
5. Edit each other’s stuff. You may need to compromise in terms of decor pieces, art objects and personal ephemera. Lovingly (and with consideration) review the things you’re bringing into the home, and decide on what to keep and what to let go of. When tossing your leftovers, consider giving to a local charity or thrift store.
