While Earth Day comes but once a year, it serves as a much-needed reminder that the way we live can often have dire consequences for our environment. However, modern living and eco-friendly habits don’t have to be incompatible. Making a difference to the environment can be as simple as changing your light bulbs!
Read on to find out how you can be a leaner, meaner, greener you:
Maintain
A leaky faucet or toilet wastes enormous quantities of water. Likewise, a poorly insulated home requires unnecessary amounts of energy to keep it heated or air-conditioned. Similarly, a furnace that is not serviced regularly is inefficient and can release toxic fumes. Simply staying on top of these minor chores around the house makes a world of difference.
Conserve
Oftentimes, we are unaware that even the smallest bad habits, leaving the tap running while you brush your teeth, for instance, can add up, resulting in major environmental damage. Save energy on a daily basis by turning down the heat at night or when you’re not home, and unplugging appliances when not in use. Always fill your dishwasher and washing machine to capacity in order to save both water and energy.
Invest
Consider purchasing newer, more energy-efficient appliances. The new generation of refrigerators, stoves and clothing dryers are much more environmentally friendly. And while it might seem like a big investment to begin with, you will soon realize that you’re saving money and saving the planet…one load of laundry at a time! If you’re not in the market for any big-ticket items, have no fear. You can still make small purchases with big impact. We weren’t kidding about the light bulbs; by switching from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs, you can do the planet a whole lot of good.
Get Creative
Surprisingly, many common household items act as all-natural cleaning products. Vinegar and baking soda, for example, are great substitutes for toxic, chemical-laced sprays and scrubs. Also, instead of traditional flooring and furnishings, why not opt for bamboo? This material is stylish and sustainable, which means less waste and environmental damage!
